Green Terror tallies 21 in both games to sweep Gallaudet
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Lauren Toomey (Pottsville,
Pa./Pottsville Area) went 5-for-6 with two doubles, four
RBIs and two runs scored to lead McDaniel to a doubleheader sweep
of Gallaudet in non-conference softball action on Thursday.
The Green Terror (9-7) won both games in five innings, tallying
a 21-3 victory in game one before downing the Bison (0-8) by a 21-2
count in the nightcap.
McDaniel rapped out 25 hits in the twinbill and drew 27 walks in
the two games combined.
The 21 runs were the most by the Green Terror since a 21-9 win
at York (Pa.) on Apr. 13, 1999. It was the first time since Apr. 8,
1996 that the team notched 20 or more runs in both games of a
doubleheader.
Back-to-back doubles from Hope Battista (Crofton,
Md./South River) and Toomey in the top of the first staked
McDaniel to an early 5-0 lead.
A Lauren Wildasin (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin)
two-run single stretched the lead to 7-0 en route to a 10-run
frame.
Beth Ann Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) keyed a two-run second with an RBI triple.
Toomey's two-run single an inning later stretched the lead
to 14-0.
After a Kara Gulvas RBI double and
Alicia Johnson sacrifice fly coupled with a
sacrifice fly made it a 17-3 game after four innings,
Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithburg, Md./Middletown)
keyed a four-run fifth with a two-run double.
Toomey finished game one with four hits while Warrenfeltz,
Fusco, Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster)
and Brittany Jarboe (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough)
each rapped out two hits.
Ashley Meister (Vienna, Va./James Madison)
fanned five in three innings of work for the win.
After building a 6-0 lead through the first two innings with the
benefit of just a bunt single from Jarboe, Samantha Staub
(Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) rapped out a two-run double in
the third to spark a 10-run frame.
Leigh Blohm (Bel Air, Md./Toms River North
[N.J.]) followed with a double to plate Stuab before
scoring on a Fusco triple.
Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) added
another two-run double later in the inning.
The Green Terror tacked on five runs in the fourth before a
Mandie Smith double, walk, hit batsman, wild pitch
and RBI groundout led to two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Staub had four RBIs in the nightcap. Lauren Fusco
(Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) pitched the first two
innings to pick up her first collegiate win in the circle.
McDaniel opens the Centennial Conference schedule at Washington
(Md.) on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1
p.m.
