WESTMINSTER, Md. – T.J. Develin (Boyertown,
Pa./Boyertown Area) contributed 134 of McDaniel's
193 total yards in a 20-13 victory over Dickinson in Centennial
Conference (CC) football action on Saturday.
The Red Devils (2-2, 1-1 CC), who outgained the Green
Terror (2-2, 1-1 CC) by a 423-193 margin, got 279 yards, including
a game-high 131 rushing, from quarterback Ian
Mitchell in their first CC loss of the season.
With the game knotted at 13, Dickinson fumbled at its own
20. Chris Kolb (Keymar, Md./Francis Scott Key)
picked up the ball at the 24 and returned it 20 yards to set up
McDaniel inside the Red Devil 5.
Develin needed just one play to bounce left and find the
end zone for a 19-13 advantage. Jay Leonard, who
was 1-for-2 on extra points to that point in the game, split the
uprights for the seven-point advantage.
Greg Lord returned the ensuing kickoff to
the 35, leaving Dickinson 1:20 and 65 yards to go for the tying
score.
Keyed by three pass plays of longer than 10 yards,
Mitchell marched the Red Devils to the McDaniel 7 before calling
the team's final timeout with 13.7 seconds on the game
clock.
On first-and-goal, Mitchell decided to tuck the ball and
run but only reached the four-yard line before Paul Smith
(Woodlawn, Md./Western Tech) stopped him and the clock
expired before Dickinson could get to the line and snap the
ball.
After Austin Miller (Odenton,
Md./Arundel) forced a fumble on the opening kickoff, the
Green Terror took over at the Red Devil 20.
Five plays later, Eric Zwilsky (Knoxville,
Md./Brunswick) punched it in from one yard out to stake
McDaniel to a 7-0 lead after the Leonard PAT.
A Nick Bender (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna
Twp.) blocked punt later in the quarter gave the Green
Terror the ball at the Dickinson 32 but Leonard miss a 20-yarder
that would have stretched the lead to 10-0.
A 32-yard Mitchell run keyed a 7-play, 80-yard drive off
the missed field goal. A 10-yard Mitchell rush pulled the visitors
within 7-6 with 1:10 remaining in the quarter but a Gordon
Craig pushed the PAT attempt kept it a one-point
game.
A 34-yard Develin return gave the Green Terror possession
at its own 49. After a two-yard rush by the tailback, Vinny
Corona (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) scrambled left and found
a wide-open Develin at the 40 and he did the rest of the work,
dashing down the sideline to give the freshman quarterback his
first collegiate touchdown pass.
The missed extra-point attempt kept it a 7-6 game with 9.0
seconds remaining in the opening stanza.
A steady rain throughout much of the second and third
quarters manufactured itself in the form of six of the game's
nine fumbles and 10 of the 17 total punts.
Still trailing by seven, Dickinson took over with 11:53
remaining in the fourth quarter at its second-best starting field
position of the day – its own 44.
After a Tim Wells four-yard rush,
Mitchell took off down the right sideline for 19 yards to set up
the Red Devils at the McDaniel 33.
Three Wells runs on the next four plays for a total of 18
yards gave Dickinson a first-and-goal at the Green Terror 7, where
Greg Lord capped the 2-minute, 49-second drive and
the Craig extra-point evened the game at 13.
Develin finished with 168 all-purpose yards, including a
career-best 85 on the ground. Corona went 4-for-10 with the one
touchdown.
Weick recorded a career-high 14 tackles while Matt
Emerson (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) also reached a
career best with nine stops.
The Green Terror returns to action at Juniata on Saturday.
