Cerone, Mezzullo Earn CSC Academic All-District Honors

GREENWOOD, Ind. - McDaniel College baseball sophomores Anthony Cerone and Thomas Mezzullo were both named to the Academic All-District® Baseball Team selected by the College Sports Communicators on Tuesday.

The Academic All-America® program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must meet the following criteria:
  • Must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
  • Must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average (GPA).
  • Must compete in 90 percent of the team's games OR must start in at least 66 percent. Pitchers must have at least 17 appearances OR pitched 35 innings.
Smith graduated on Saturday with a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology and Psychology an a 3.763 GPA. An All-Centennial Conference Second Team selection, she led the team with a .402 batting average, a mark that ranked seventh in the conference. She also led the team in games played (34), hits (46), runs (30), and total bases (54).

Cerone is an  major with a 3.834 GPA. He ranked second on the team and fifth in the conference with 56 RBIs while hitting .378 with 54 hits, eight doubles, and five home runs. Over the team's final 18 games, he hit .395 with 30 hits, four doubles, three home runs and a team-high 29 RBIs.

Mezzullo is a Business Administration major with a 3.622 GPA. He earned All-America and all-region honors from both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com and was an All-Centennial Conference first team selection who won the conference's Gold Glove of the Year award. He led the team and ranked second in the conference with a .433 batting average while setting a new program record and finishing third in the conference with 71 hits. He also ranked third in the league with 120 assists while posting a .954 fielding percentage at shortstop.

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced Tuesday, June 23.
