THE SKINNY
In a back-and-forth battle, McDaniel grabbed a pair of two-run leads in the middle of the game before staving off one final Johns Hopkins rally late for a 7-6 victory.
THE LEADERS
• Jake Smith (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) led the Green Terror with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.
• Ryan Gibbons (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) pitched the final three innings for his conference-leading fifth save of the year.
FOR THE FOES
• Shawn Steuerer led the Blue Jays with three hits of his own.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a leadoff home run by Jack Pausic.
• An inning later, Dylan Whitney led off with a single to right before moving to second on a sacrifice and scoring on a Matthew Cooper double to make it 2-0.
• In the bottom of the frame, a two-out Billy Wheatley (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) single up the middle and a hit batter put runners at first and second. Tyler Yohn (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) followed with a single to center to score Wheatley and make it a 2-1 game.
• Austin Goudeaux (Elkton, Md./Bohemia Manor) walked to lead off the fourth before a Jake Smith bloop hit put two on with no outs. Jack Bayne (Lutherville, Md./Towson) poked a ball back up the middle to score Goudeaux and tie the game. With runners at the corners, an T.J. McGuire (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) RBI groundout made it a 3-2 game.
• Shane Daly (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) led off the fifth with a triple to the fence in left before scoring on a one-out Joey Hubinger (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) RBI groundout.
• Shawn Steuerer singled on a hard-hit ball back to the mound with one out in the sixth. After a Jared deFaria double put runners at second and third, a Pausic sacrifice fly and Sam Frank double tied the game at 4-all. A hit batter after a pitching change and Tripp Myers single put the Blue Jays in front, 5-4.
• In the bottom of the inning, Smith poked a ball through the left side before Bayne beat out a bunt. A four-pitch walk to McGuire loaded the bases before Wheatley drew a one-out walk to force in Smith and tie the game once again. A fielder's choice groundout by Daly and errant throw put the Green Terror back in front by two, 7-5.
• Pausic led off the eighth with a single but was erased on a fielder's choice. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases before a groundout scored Frank to cut the deficit to one. Johns Hopkins reloaded the bases with two outs but a groundout stranded the bases loaded and kept it a 7-6 game.
• A leadoff single and hit batter with one out put runners at first and second but Ryan Gibbons got a double play to end the game.
THE INSIDE STORY
• It was McDaniel's first win over Johns Hopkins since a 13-12 home win on Apr. 13, 2015.
• Shane Daly's run in the fifth inning was his 54th run scored of the season, tying the single-season program record. The triple that inning was his 10th of the season. He is just the fourth player in conference history to hit double-digit three-baggers in one season.
• Jack Bayne also had two hits on the day.
• Ryan Martino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Millennium Brooklyn) threw 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and no walks but did not factor in the decision. Jack Valentine (Hockessin, Del./Sanford School) got the final out of the sixth to improve to 4-0 on the mound.
