THE SKINNY
Stevenson jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings en route to a 6-2 victory over McDaniel.
THE LEADERS
• Jake Smith (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) rapped out two hits and drove in both Green Terror runs.
FOR THE FOES
• Trevor Smoot led the Mustangs with three hits.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• After Cameron Nebel worked around traffic in the first two innings, Amani Jones led off the home second with a single into the gap. Trevor Smoot followed with his first single before a Will Mesa base hit loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Dylan Scott pushed a bunt to the first-base side of the mound to score Jones for a 1-0 lead. A Brandon Perillo sacrifice fly made it a 2-0 game one batter later.
• Jonathan Brandt poked a single up the middle to start the third before stealing second. After a Tommy Holcomb single put runners at the corners, Jones lofted a ball to left for a sacrifice fly and 3-0 lead. Smoot followed with a single to push the advantage to four.
• A one-out walk, stolen base, passed ball, and throwing error stretched the lead to 5-0 in the fourth.
• Santino DeFilippo (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) singled to lead off the top of the fifth. A two-out hit by pitch and fielder's choice put runners at the corners with two outs. After Shane Daly (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) stole second, Jake Smith drove a ball into the gap to score both runners and cut the deficit to 5-2. Joey Hubinger (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) followed with a double to put runners at second and third with the tying run at the plate but Nebel induced a ground ball to get out of further damage.
• A one-out walk, error, stolen base, and balk led to an unearned run in the sixth that set the final margin.
• McDaniel loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth but Malcolm Edelin came out of the bullpen and got two strikeouts and a fly ball to prevent any runs from scoring.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Matt Speakman (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) struck out four in two innings.
