Sheppard records hat trick in conference opener

THE SKINNY
After trading goals in the first five minutes, Franklin & Marshall, ranked sixth in the latest IWLCA Div. III coaches poll, scored 10 straight goals en route to a 20-10 win over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.

THE LEADERS
Emily Sheppard (Queenstown, Md./Queen Anne's County) led the Green Terror with a season-high three goals.
Emma Miller (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) added three goals of her own.

FOR THE FOES

• Marissa McGarrey led the Diplomats with four goals and two assists.
• Maddy Birch added a hat trick and assist.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• Gillian Brenna finished the first of Marissa McGarrey's assists in the opening 36 seconds of the game before Acadia Noll (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) responded less than a minute later. McGarrey then found the back of the net with 11:46 remaining before Lara Jensen (West Chester, Pa./The Tatnall School) tied the game once again a minute later. The Diplomats then scored the next six goals, including two from Madison Bray, to take an 8-2 lead into the second period.
• Four different Franklin & Marshall players scored in the first 9:31 of the second quarter to extend the advantage to 10 before Noll found Emily Sheppard with 4:28 remaining to halt the run. Maddy Birch, however, pushed the lead back to 10 at the intermission with a goal at the 1:58 mark.
• Noll and Sheppard once again connected in the opening 30 seconds of the third quarter but McGarrey scored twice in a 2-minute, 12-second stretch for a 15-4 lead with 10:58 showing. Sheppard capped her hat trick with 9:11 on the clock before the Diplomats tallied three of the next four. Emma Miller finished a solo run in the final 15 seconds of the quarter to make it 18-7.
• Miller then scored two more in the first 2:33 of the fourth quarter for a natural hat trick. Kealey Allison (Frankford, Del./Indian River) netted her second of the day with 3:54 remaining to make it an 18-10 game but Birch and Gillaian Brennan scored in the final 2:26 for the 10-goal final margin.

THE INSIDE STORY
Acadia Noll added a career-best five assists to her goal. She also had five draw controls.

NEXT UP
McDaniel returns to action at Bryn Mawr on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
