Smith wraps up Myrtle Beach trip with three-hit day

THE SKINNY
After watching McDaniel rally from an 8-1 deficit to take the lead in the top of the 10th, Salem State scored twice in the bottom of the frame for a 10-9 victory.

THE LEADERS
Jake Smith (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) led the Green Terror with three hits on the day.

FOR THE FOES
• Tim Catalano had three hits to pace the Vikings.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• Keyed by a pair of errors and a Zachary Piroh two-run home run, Salem jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
• Traverse Briana made it 7-0 with a two-run long ball in the second.
• A Connor Uhrig (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) ground out plated Billy Wheatly (Galloway, N.J./ASbsegami) in the top of the fourth before Salem got the run back on a Derek Angell sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.
• The Green Terror plated one run in the fifth before back-to-back leadoff home runs from Uhrig and T.J. McGuire (Blue Pont, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) in the seventh made it an 8-4 game.
• McDaniel drew to within one in the eighth before Austin Goudeaux (Elkton, Md./Bohemia Manor) drew a two-out walk in the ninth and scored on a Jake Smith double to tie the game.
Evan Scala (Whiting, N.J./Manchester Twp.) reached on a one-out error in the top of the 10th before a Tyler Perry (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) double for the 9-8 lead.
• In the bottom of the inning, Catalano led off with a single before Matthew Casare walked and both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice. After Jake Boucher was hit by a pitch, Angell reached on an error to score Catalano. Briana followed with a sacrifice fly, plating Casare with the game-winning run.

THE INSIDE STORY
Austin Goudeaux, T.J. McGuire, Jarod Pezzano, and Tyler Perry all had two hits.

NEXT UP
McDaniel returns to action at home against Stockton on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 12 p.m.
