THE SKINNY
New England College scored in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 4-all deadlock and defeat McDaniel 5-4 on both team's first game at the Ripken Spring Break Experience in Myrtle Beach.
THE LEADERS
• Billy Wheatley (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) led the Green Terror with three hits in the game.
FOR THE FOES
• Harutaro Takahashi led the Pilgrims with four hits that included three doubles.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Harutaro Takahashi led of the home second with a double before stealing third and scoring on a JD Normand single to left. After a Patrick Hagerty single put runners at first and second, McDaniel got two straight pop ups, including a foul bunt attempt, before Brady Philibotte poked a single into center for a 2-0 lead.
• Two walks and a two-out Takahashi double down the line stretched the lead to 3-0 in the fifth.
• After Sylvain Audet had cruised through five innings, allowing just one hit with four walks and 10 strikeouts, back-to-back errors to start the sixth put two McDaniel runners on base. Austin Goudeaux (Elkton, Md./Bohemia Manor) reached on an infield single with two outs to put runners at first and second. After Joey Hubinger (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) stole third, he was able to score on a Billy Wheatley single to make it a 3-1 game.
• A Michael Ciccotelli double scored Kyle Dobrie in the bottom of the frame to push the lead back to three.
• A one-out error allowed Evan Scala (Whiting, N.J./Manchester Twp.) to reach before back-to-back singles from Shane Daly (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) and Jake Smith (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) made it a 4-2 game but a double play got New England College out of further damage.
• Tyler Yohn (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) singled to lead off the eighth before a Goudeaux walk. Wheatley followed with a double to score Yohn before a T.J. McGuire (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) sacrifice fly scored Goudeaux to tie the game.
• In the bottom of the ninth, Connor Morin was hit by a pitch before a one-out Takahashi double put runners at second and third. An intentional walk loaded the bases for Hagerty, whose sacrifice fly won the game.
