THE SKINNY
Montclair manufactured a run in the bottom of the 10th inning of game one to top McDaniel 7-6 before using a five-run fourth inning in game two to complete the sweep, 6-3.
THE LEADERS
• T.J. McGuire (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) led the Green Terror with three hits in the twinbill, including his first collegiate home run. He also drove in two runs and scored four.
• Joey Hubinger (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) went 2-for-4 with an RBI in each game.
FOR THE FOES
• Michael Murphy led the Red Hawks with four hits on the day. He also had two RBIs and a run scored.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• In game one, McDaniel had three baserunners in the first two innings but could not push a run across the plate before a two-out Jordan Jurkiewicz infield single gave Montclair its first baserunner in the bottom of the second. After he moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt, a Michael Murphy double to right staked the Red Hawks to a 1-0 lead.
• Peter Cosentino led off the home fourth with a double. A Sam Angelo bloop single put runners at the corners with one out before Jurkiewicz doubled to the gap for a 3-0 lead. A Murphy RBI knock to right stretched the advantage to 4-0.
• Ryan McKenna doubled to start the fifth before taking third on a fly out. He then beat a throw home on an Andrew Oilwerther ground ball and later scored on a two-out ground ball for a 6-0 lead.
• With one out in the top of the sixth, Shane Daly (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) drew a four-pitch walk. After a Jake Smith (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) ground ball through the right side put runners at the corners, Joey Hubinger doubled to right scored Daly before a hit by pitch loaded the bases. Tyler Yohn (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) drew a walk to force in Smith. A throwing error and Connor Uhrig (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) closed the deficit to 6-4 at the end of the inning.
• McGuire and pinch-hitter Jack Bayne (Lutherville, Md./Towson) drew back-to-back walks to lead off the seventh. Daly reached on a bunt single to load the bases before McGuire scored on a Smith RBI groundout. After an intentional pass to Hubinger to load the bases again with one out, Billy Wheatley (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) grounded out but scored Bayne with the game-tying run.
• Each team had opportunities in extras before Angelo drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 10th. Pinch-runner Joe Gisonda then moved to second on a pickoff attempt that went out of play. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Anthony Guarino was hit by a pitch. A ground ball prevented the run from scoring but loaded the bases before McDaniel got the first out at the plate on another ground ball. A throwing error on the next ground ball, however, allowed Guarino to score with the game-winning run.
• In the nightcap, McGuire blasted a 1-0 pitch over the right-field fence for a home run with one out in the second for a 1-0 lead.
• Ollwerther led off the bottom of the frame with a single before moving to second on a balk. After a Murphy bunt single, Ollwerther tied the game on a groundout to the right side.
• A walk to McGuire, two wild pitches, a walk to Daly, and Smith sacrifice put the Green Terror back in front by one in the fourth.
• Murphy and Moore drew back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the inning. A Guarino single loaded the bases before a miscue scored Murphy and kept the bases loaded. Another ground ball scored Moore and put Montclair in front, 3-2. McKenna then singled home Guarino before a wild pitch and intentional walk reloaded the bases. A Jurkiewicz sacrifice fly and Ollwerther single capped the five-run inning.
• With one out in the sixth, McGuire singled before moving to second on a wild pitch. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Hubinger poked a single through the right side to score McGuire with two outs and make it a 6-3 game. Red Hawk pitching, however, got the final four outs by strikeout to finish the sweep.
