THE FACTS
McDaniel (5-0) 1, #1 Messiah (2-1-1) 0
What: Non-conference women's soccer game
When:
Wednesday, Sept. 15
Where: Westminster, Md.

THE SKINNY STORY
McDaniel did something that had not been done in any of the previous 586 Green Terror women's soccer games – defeat a No. 1-ranked team. The Green Terror used a late goal to break a scoreless deadlock and top Messiah, 1-0.

THE LEADERS
Hannah Schepers (Port Deposit, Md./St. Mark's) scored the game-winning goal for McDaniel.

FOR THE FOES
• Courtney Dunlop led the Falcons with three saves in goal.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• The Green Terror had the better opportunities in a scoreless first half, including peppering four of its eight first-half shots off three consecutive corner kicks in the 28th, 29th, and 30th minutes. McDaniel finished the first half with an 8-3 advantage in shots despite Messiah's attempt at controlling possession.
• Messiah had the run of play early in the second half with a handful of opportunities that the Green Terror defense was able to thwart. However, McDaniel was able to steal possession in the Messiah end in the 77th minute. After Maddie Schwartz (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) controlled the ball and beat the defense, she was able to find Hannah Schepers at the top of the box. The senior one-timed the pass with her left foot into the upper-left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead with 13:12 to play. The defense was able to withstand one final push by the Falcons to preserve the win.

THE INSIDE STORY
• McDaniel finished with a 9-7 edge in shots with its only second-half shot resulting in the game-winning goal. The Green Terror also had an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.
• It was the first time McDaniel had ever beaten a No.1-ranked team and the Green Terror's first win over Messiah since 1998, snapping a 12-game losing streak. It is just the third time a Centennial Conference (CC) team has knocked off a top-ranked team and the first time in shutout fashion.
• Katherine Carstensen (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), the reigning CC Defensive Player of the Week, made five saves for her third straight individual shutout.
• This is the first time in program history that the Green Terror has started a season with five straight shutouts. Dating back to last season, McDaniel has shut out nine straight opponents and has not allowed a goal in 862 minutes, 21 seconds.
