THE SKINNY
In a showdown between Johns Hopkins, ranked second in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, and McDaniel, ranked seventh, 90 minutes wasn't enough to decide a defensive masterpiece. Each team managed to find the back of the net once in the second half, but it was the Blue Jays who finished with the upperhand, netting the game-winner in the final two minutes of the first extra period.
THE LEADERS
• Jessica Weinoldt (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) scored for the Green Terror, connecting on a late header that ultimately forced overtime.
• Katherine Carstensen (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) anchored a solid defensive effort with four saves.
FOR THE FOES
• Katie Sullivan netted the game-winner for the Blue Jays.
• Caitlin Hendricks finished with seven saves in net.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• After an evenly played first half in which both defenses made it a struggle to create any quality opportunities, Lilah Isenberg was able to break up the shutout in the 64th minute, striking a shot into the upper-right hand corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
• Momentum turned and McDaniel took control late. In the final five minutes of regulation, Maddie Schwartz (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) put a free kick off the crossbar and it bounced straight down. In the ensuing scrum, the ball eventually bounced out to Jessica Weinholdt, who was able to head it past the keeper and draw the game even.
• The Blue Jays regrouped, however, to control much of extra 10-minute session. With just 1:38 to play, Rachel Jackson placed a perfect cross to the feet of Katie Sullivan, who connected for the game-winner in the left side of the net.
THE INSIDE STORY
• The Green Terror finished with a 16-11 advantage in shots and 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
• With the victory, Johns Hopkins remains as the lone unbeaten team in the CC and – with four games remaining in the conference slate – holds the inside track at the top spot and hosting rights for the conference tournament.
• McDaniel had its 12-game winning streak to start the season, and 16-game winning streak dating back to the end of 2019, snapped with its first loss of the season.
• It is the seventh matchup since 2015 between McDaniel and Johns Hopkins decided by one goal or fewer and the third such overtime affair.
