THE SKINNY STORY
McDaniel got strong pitching to go with timely offense to win a pair of low-scoring games and sweep Elmira, winning the opener 3-1 and taking the nightcap, 2-1.
THE LEADERS
• Ryan Martino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Millennium Brooklyn) led the Green Terror in game one, going the distance on the hill. He scatted four hits and allowed one unearned run with two strikeouts.
• Jack Vener (Easton, Md./St. Michael's) allowed four hits and one run with two strikeouts in four innings to pick up the game-two victory.
• Julian Jenkins (Tempe, Ariz./Desert Vista) had the only multiple-hit game with two knocks in game one.
FOR THE FOES
• Jack Volpe went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two to pace the Soaring Eagles.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Julian Jenkins singled up the middle to lead off the bottom of the first in the opener. After he stole both second and third, Will Strauss (Freeport, N.Y./Waldorf) drew a walk and then stole second. Back-to-back RBI groundouts to the right side by Joey Hubinger (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) and Jack Slater (Hebron, Conn./Rham) staked McDaniel to a 2-0 lead.
• A two-out error, passed ball and second fielding error in the inning allowed Elmira to cut the deficit in half in the third.
• Tom Daly (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) led off the home fifth with a double to right before moving to third on a sacrifice and scoring on an Isaiah Ishmail (Cherry Hill, N.J.) single to left for the final margin.
• In game two, Hubinger and Slater drew back-to-back two-out walks in the first before TJ McGuire (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Daly was hit by his sixth pitch of the year to force in Hubinger for a 1-0 lead.
• With one out in the second, Ishmail was hit by a pitch before taking second on a failed pickoff and stealing third. After Jenkins walked, a double steal made it a 2-0.
• Jack Volpe tripled to the fence in left-center with one out in the third before scoring on a Mark Ryan RBI groundout to cut the deficit in half but just three Eagles reached base the rest of the way.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Jordan Rhodes (Fawn Grove, Pa./McDonogh [Md.]) threw the final four outs of game two for his second save of the year.
• Tom Daly had a hit in each game.
• Each team had just four hits in game one while Elmira outhit McDaniel 6-3 in game two.
