Mays fans nine in complete-game win

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-4 lead en route to a 9-5 victory over Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Wednesday.

Robbie Mays (Parkton, Md./Hereford) led the Green Terror (11-16, 4-11 CC) on the mound with nine strikeouts, allowing just two earned runs in the complete-game win.

Joe Giovinco led the Bullets (10-21, 4-11 CC) with a 5-for-5 day at the plate.

Trailing 4-2, Griffin Mahon (Rockville, Md./St. John's College) led off the bottom of the sixth with a single.

After a double play, Mike Dunn (Lanham, Md./DeMatha) singled and stole second.

An Antonio Rosanova (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) double cut the deficit to 4-3 before Kasey Nelson (St. Pete Beach, Fla./St. Michael's [Md.]) singled home Rosanova with the tying run.

Three more singles from Evan Finch (Laurel, Md./St. John's College), Ryan Downes (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Gorretti) and Zachary Glover (Westminster, Md./Calvert Hall) gave the hosts a 6-4 advantage.

A two-out walk to pinch-hitter Brad Thaxton (Stevensville, Md./DeMatha) and double from another pinch-hitter Sam Brustad (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College) put runners at second and third in the eighth.

Tom Daly (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) drew a walk to load the bases for Mahon, who doubled to clear the bases and stretch the lead to 9-4.

Mays got the first two outs of the ninth before a Patrick McDermott walk and Giovinco single closed the deficit to 9-5.

Two more singles from Sean Murphy and Matt Szczesny loaded the bases before Mays got his ninth strikeout of the day to strand the tying run at the plate.

An error on the first batter of the game set the stage for a three-run top of the first.

Dunn drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the frame before stealing second and scoring on a two-out Finch single.

Walks to Rosanova and Nelson with one out in the third and a Downes two-out single closed the deficit to 3-2 before the Bullets got one run back on a Josh Cubell RBI groundout in the top of the sixth.

Finch, Downes and Mahon finished the day with three hits each while Dunn and Rosanova had two knocks each.

The Green Terror concludes the home-and-home series at Gettysburg on Friday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
