Boyle captures pair of bronze medals

LANCASTER, Pa. – Blair Boyle (Springfield, N.J./Villa Walsh Academy) won a pair of bronze medals and pair of program records to lead McDaniel at the Centennial Conference (CC) women's swimming championship hosted by Franklin & Marshall on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Scoring:

  • The Green Terror finished seventh with 280 points. Ursinus won fifth straight championship with 929 points, easily outdistancing Swarthmore. The Garnet was second in the eight-team field with 603 points.

Precious Metal: The following athletes took home a medal at the championship at the meet:

  • The 200 free relay of Blair Boyle, Samantha Smith (Bangkok, Thailand/International School of Bangkok), Bryn Blanchard (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) and Sara Hegna (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) took bronze on Friday night. The quartet posted a time of 1:38.68.
  • Blair Boyle added a bronze medal in the 100 free on Sunday. After qualifying third with a time of 53.10 seconds, she posted a time of 52.64 seconds in the evening session.

Night Warriors: The following athletes advanced to the finals at the championship:

  • Blair Boyle qualified 12th in the 500 free on Friday with a time of 5:14.32. In the B Finals, she finished 15th with a time of 5:19.10. On Saturday, she qualified eighth in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.22. In the A Finals, she finished sixth with a time of 1:56.51. On Sunday, she qualified third in the 100 free with a time of 53.10 seconds. In the A Finals, she finished third.
  • Samantha Smith qualified eighth in the 200 IM on Friday with a time of 2:12.50. In the A Finals, she finished fifth with a time of 2:11.35. On Saturday, she qualified fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.04 seconds. In the A Finals, she finished fourth with a time of 57.57 seconds. She also qualified fifth in the 100 backstroke on Saturday with a time of 58.78 seconds. In the A Finals, she finished eighth with a time of 1:00.35.
  • Sara Hegna qualified seventh in the 50 free on Friday with a time of 24.49 seconds. In the A Finals, she finished seventh with a time of 24.54 seconds. On Saturday, she qualified 11th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.44. In the B Finals, she finished 11th with a time of 1:00.27. On Sunday, she qualified seventh in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.17. In the A Finals, she eighth with a time of 2:10.32.
  • Cara Dube (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) qualified 12th in the 400 IM on Saturday with a time of 4:51.43. In the B Finals, she finished 15th with a time of 4:57.63. On Sunday, she qualified sixth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.56. In the A Finals, she finished fourth with a time of 2:06.87.
  • Bryn Blanchard qualified 16th in the 100 breaststroke on Saturday with a time of 1:10.52. In the B Finals, she finished 15th with a time of 1:09.91.
  • Emma Perdue (Grasonville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) qualified 13th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:31.94. In the B Finals, she finished 15th with a time of 2:33.30.

Record Setting Performance: The following athletes established a record at the championship:

  • Samantha Smith turned in a program-record performance in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.57 seconds, resetting her record from the morning prelims.
  • Cara Dube turned in a program-record performance in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:06.87.
  • Blair Boyle turned in a program-record performance in the 100 free with a time of 52.64 seconds.
  • The 800 free relay of Sara Hegna, Blair Boyle, Joanna Wattenberg and Maddie Gamble turned in a program-record performance of 7:58.24, finishing sixth.

Top 10 Worthy: The following athletes achieved a mark that ranks in the program's all-time top 10:

  • Blair Boyle now ranks sixth in the 500 free (5:14.32).
  • Boyle also now ranks second in the 200 free (1:56.51).
  • Sara Hegna now ranks second in the 50 free (24.49 seconds).
  • Joanna Wattenberg (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) now ranks eighth in the 100 backstroke, finishing 19th (1:01.87).
  • Wattenberg also now ranks seventh in the 200 backstroke, finishing 17th (2:14.96).
  • The 200 medley relay of Sara Hegna, Bryn Blanchard, Samantha Smith and Blair Boyle now ranks third, finishing fifth (1:49.19).
  • The 200 free relay of Boyle, Smith, Blanchard and Hegna now ranks third (1.38.68).
  • The 400 medley relay of Sara Hegna, Bryn Blanchard, Samantha Smith and Blair Boyle now ranks second, finishing fifth (4:01.88).
