Box Score 2 HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford rapped out 28 hits in a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel to open the Centennial Conference (CC) baseball season on Sunday.
The Fords (11-7, 2-0 CC) captured the opener 10-0 before completing the sweep behind a 12-run fifth inning, 17-9.
Brad Thaxton (Stevensville, Md./DeMatha) led the Green Terror (8-11, 0-2 CC) with a 2-for-2 day off the bench in game two.
Matt Goss led Haverford with four hits, including a home run in each game.
In the opener, an Ethan Lee-Tyson double to lead off the bottom of the first coupled with a wild pitch and Ben Verducci one-out double to left staked the hosts to a 1-0 lead.
A Goss leadoff home run in the second doubled the advantage before Verducci doubled to lead off the third and Sam Partee followed with a first-pitch home run to center field for a 4-0 advantage.
Another Partee two-run homer capped a four-run fourth that pushed the lead to 8-0.
Will Karp capped the scoring with a two-run single through the left side with two away in the home half of the sixth.
Tied at 5-all in game two, Spence Sohmer drew a walk to start a bottom of the fifth in which 17 Fords came to the plate, scoring 12 runs.
Goss had the big blow of the frame, delivering a grand slam to left field for the final four runs of the inning.
Lee-Tyson doubled home a pair of runners before Verducci and Partee each singled after a second Sohmer walk in the frame to load the bases for Goss.
After Michael Gallagher (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) walked to lead off the top of the seventh, Thaxton notched a pinch-hit single and Logan Seitz (Columbia, Md./Howard) poked a one-out single to left field to plate Gallagher.
An error allowed Thaxton to score and make it a 17-7 game.
An error and Sam Brustad (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College) double put runners at second and third before Will Strauss (Freeport, N.Y./Waldorf) walked on four pitches to load the bases with nobody out.
A one-out Thaxton single plated Tom Daly (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) before Seitz walked to force in Brustad and set the final margin.
Lee-Tyson opened the scoring, singling to lead off the home first before stealing second, advancing to third on a groundout and scoring on a wild pitch.
Nick Valori (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) homered to lead off the second and tie the game at 1-all.
Goss doubled to lead off the home second and spark a four-run frame. A Sohmer two-run single up the middle made it a 5-1 game.
Antonio Rosanova (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) singled to open the third then stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
A two-out error allowed two more runs to score in the inning, trimming the deficit to 5-4.
A Gallagher infield single and Eric Grantland (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) triple tied the game in the top of the fourth.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against No. 19 Johns Hopkins on Tuesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
