Knadler repeats as 50 free champ

LANCASTER, Pa. – Syd Knadler (Crowley Lake, Calif./Mammoth) took home her second straight gold medal in the 50 free and was part of a pair of program records to lead McDaniel at the Centennial Conference (CC) women's swimming championship hosted by Franklin & Marshall on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Scoring:

  • The Green Terror finished seventh with 333 points. Ursinus won fourth straight championship with 815 points, easily outdistancing Gettysburg. The Bullets were second in the eight-team field with 537 points.

Striking Gold: The following athletes won an event at the championship:

  • Syd Knadler won the 50 free for the second straight year on Friday. She was the top seed in the prelims with a program-record time of 24.03 seconds before winning by 0.21 seconds in the finals, turning in a time of 24.13 seconds.

Night Warriors: The following athletes advanced to the finals at the championship:

  • Samantha Smith (Bangkok, Thailand/International School of Bangkok) qualified third in the 200 IM on Friday with a time of 2:11.05. In the A Finals, she finished fourth with a time of 2:10.70. On Saturday, she qualified fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.47 seconds. In the A Finals, she finsiehd fifth with a time of 58.36 seconds. She also qualified sixth in the 100 backstroke on Saturday with a time of 59.51. In the A Finals, she finished fourth with a time of 58.74.
  • Cara Dube (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) qualified 11th in the 200 IM on Friday with a time of 2:13.98. In the B Finals, she finished 15th with a time of 2:15.47. On Saturday, she qualified seventh in the 400 IM with a time of 4:44.86. In the A Finals, she finished eighth with a time of 4:49.33. On Sunday, she qualified third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.43. In the A Finals, she finished fourth with a time of 2:07.76.
  • Juliann Rossi (Marriottsville, Md./McDonogh) qualified 12th in the 400 IM on Saturday with a time of 4:51.14. In the B Finals, she finished 13th with a time of 4:50.94.
  • Syd Knadler qualified 15th in the 100 butterfly on Saturday with a time of 1:00.42. In the B Finals, she finished 10th with a time of 59.50 seconds – the sixth best time of the night session. On Sunday, she qualified sixth in the 100 free with a time of 54.10 seconds. In the A Finals, she finished fourth with a time of 53.39.
  • Kelly Lewis (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) qualified fourth in the 100 breaststroke on Saturday with a time of 1:06.64. In the A Finals, she finished fourth with a time of 1:07.21. On Sunday, she qualified fourth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:25.22. In the A Finals, she finished fourth with a time of 2:26.58.
  • Emma Perdue (Grasonville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) qualified 14th in the 100 breaststroke on Saturday with a time of 1:10.99. In the B Finals, she finished 13th with a time of 1:10.67. On Sunday, she qualified 11th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:30.61. In the B Finals, she finished 10th with a time of 2:30.03.
  • Bryn Blanchard (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) qualified 16th in the 100 breaststroke on Saturday with a time of 1:12.23. In the B Finals, she finished 15th with a time of 1:11.53.
  • Sara Hegna (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) qualified 10th in 100 backstroke on Saturday with a time of 1:00.04. In the B Finals, she finished 12th with a time of 1:00.49. On Sunday, she qualified eighth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:10.68. In the A Finals, she finished sixth with a time of 2:09.73.

Record Setting Performance: The following athletes established a record at the championship:

  • Samantha Smith turned a program-record performance in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.70, resetting her record from the morning prelims.
  • Smith also turned in a program-record performance in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.36, resetting her record from the morning prelims.
  • Syd Knadler turned in a program-record performance in the 50 free with a time of 24.03 in the prelims.
  • The 400 medley relay of Sara Hegna, Kelly Lewis, Samantha Smith and Syd Knadler turned in a program-record time of 3:59.08, breaking the old mark by more than three seconds.
  • Cara Dube turned in a program-record performance in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:07.76, resetting her record from the morning prelims.
  • Kelly Lewis turned in a program-record performance in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:25.22 in the prelims.
  • The 200 medley relay of Sara HegnaKelly LewisSamantha Smith and Syd Knadler turned in a program-record time of 1:48.18, finishing fourth.
