McDonald makes 10 saves

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – In a game in which the defenses dominated the night, Lynchburg was finally able to break through for the game's lone goal midway through the first overtime, defeating McDaniel 1-0 in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Div. III women's soccer tournament on Saturday.

Sarah McDonald (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) anchored a backline for the Green Terror (12-6-2) that thwarted attacks by the Hornets (19-3) all night. McDonald finished the game with 10 saves while the defense – anchored by Kristen Upton (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) in the middle – cleared multiple other opportunities.

Kennedy Jakubek netted the game winner for No. 20 Lynchburg, finishing a pass that Caitlin Mertens sent along the end line from the left side. Jakubek was on the back side of the net to knock the ball into the net for her 11th goal of the season at the 95:56 mark.

McDaniel's best chances came when Kirsten Gibson (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) took a ball from over the top in the 21st minute and had a one-on-keeper but her shot from the top of box peeled just left of the frame.

In the second half, Abby Keen (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) floated a ball from 40 yards out that bounced off the crossbar and over to keep it a scoreless game in the 56th minute.

McDonald and Upton twice combined in a five-minute stretch between the 66th and 71st minute to keep Lynchburg off the scoreboard. In the first attempt, McDonald saved a shot from close range and Upton was there to clear away a rebound attempt. Five minutes later, McDonald deflected a shot from the wing but it rolled past and Upton was able to clear it off the line.

The Green Terror had the final quality look on a free kick from 40 yards out in the 87th minute. Keen's boot went right to the keeper but the ball got away before a Horner defender was able to knock it away.

Lynchburg finished with a 28-13 advantage in shots and 11-3 advantage in corner kicks and will advance to Sunday's second round against host Christopher Newport.
