OPENING KICKOFF: Today's Centennial Conference (CC) game marks the 21st meeting between McDaniel (0-1, 0-0 CC) and Moravian (1-0, 0-0 CC) in a series that dates back to 1972. The Greyhounds hold a 13-7 advantage in the all-time series, including three wins in the first three meetings since the renewal of conference foes in 2007 as well as the last two years, 28-7 and 40-8. The Green Terror snapped that streak with a 13-10 victory in 2010 in Westminster and made it back-to-back victories with a 35-14 home win in 2011 before winning again in 2013, 21-14.
WHEN LAST WE MET: Moravian scored 20 straight points to break a 6-all deadlock en route to a 40-8 victory over McDaniel in the CC opener last season. Drew Scott (Brick, N.J./Brick Twp.) led the Green Terror on defense with 11 tackles, including seven solo stops. Mike Oliveto led the way on offense, catching seven passes for 46 yards. Chris Negron paced the Greyhounds with 143 rushing yards, scoring one touchdown.
LAST TIME OUT: Catholic rallied from a 21-6 deficit to defeat McDaniel 28-21 in overtime in season-opening football action on Saturday. Ray Doh (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) led the Green Terror on defense with seven tackles, including two for loss, and two pass breakups. John Chamberlin (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) led the offense with 75 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown. Jorge Pola completed 23 of 43 passes for the Cardinals (1-0), throwing for 246 yards in his first start at quarterback.
WITH HONORS: Tyler DeMent (Olney, Md./Northwest), Ray Doh and Doug MacArthur (Roebling, N.J./Florence Twp. Memorial) were named to their respective CC Weekly Honor Rolls last week. DeMent was named to the offensive ledger after catching his first collegiate touchdown pass for the Green Terror on Saturday. He also amassed a career-best 65 yards on five catches. Doh was tabbed to the defensive list after leading the Green Terror defense with seven tackles, all solo stops. He had one sack and two tackles for loss. He also recovered a fumble to set up a McDaniel touchdown and had two pass breakups.. MacArthur earned a spot on the special teams list after unfurling eight punts for a total of 301 yards in his debut as the starting punter. He averaged 37.6 yards per kick and dropped four punts inside the 20. He also had a 50-yard punt with his heels on the back of the end zone.
LEADING THE WAY: Tyler DeMent, Vince Gorgone (Clarksville, Md./Good Counsel) and Matt Quattrone (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) will captain the squad in 2016. This is the second straight year Quattrone has served as a captain while DeMent and Gorgone are first-time captains.
OPENING STATEMENTS: McDaniel has won three of its last six CC openers, snapping a four-year skid, but has dropped back-to-back decisions to Moravian last year. The Green Terror last defeated Moravian 21-14 in Westminster in 2013. After a one-year hiatus, the Green Terror returned to opening the conference slate against Moravian in 2011. The Greyhounds won each of the first three CC meetings when the two teams met in the first conference game of the season. The Green and Gold are 15-18 in conference lidlifters since the inception of the CFC. The Green Terror dropped its first eight openers after the creation of the CFC in 1983 – all to Gettysburg. For the first 20 years, McDaniel and Gettysburg squared off with the Bullets holding a slight 11-9 advantage. Ursinus was the first opponent on the Green Terror's CC schedule for the next four years. McDaniel won the first three of those meetings.
DOH, RAY, ME: Ray Doh led the Green Terror on defense in the opener at Catholic last week. Among his seven solo tackles were two for loss, including one sack. He also recovered a fumble that set up the McDaniel offense at the Catholic 12-yard line. Three plays later, John Chamberlin turned that fumble into six points. Doh also broke up two passes.
WORKING EXTRA: McDaniel played its first overtime game since 2012 on Saturday. However, it was the first road overtime game for the Green Terror since 2005. During the 2005 season, McDaniel played three overtime games, going 1-2 in such contests. The first overtime game of the season was a 37-36 double-overtime win over the Cardinals at home. Catholic scored a touchdown to open the second OT but the PAT was blocked before McDaniel was able to answer the touchdown and convert the extra point for the win. Later that season, the Green Terror dropped a 25-22 triple-overtime affair at Dickinson (Oct. 15) and won a 17-14 single-OT game against Franklin & Marshall on Homecoming (Oct. 29).
DEFENSE CAN SCORE, TOO: Keegan Romanoff (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) snagged his first collegiate interception midway through the fourth quarter last week. The sophomore cornerback then found the end zone from 30 yards out for the Green Terror's first pick-6 since Sean Lajoie had a 12-yard interception return for a touchdown against Johns Hopkins on Nov. 12, 2011.
ALL TY'D UP: Tyler DeMent hauled in his first touchdown in a McDaniel uniform on Saturday. The senior hauled in a 12-yard reception from his high school teammate Matthew Callahan (Germantown, Md./Northwest) with 8:53 to play in the second quarter, tying the game at 6-all. DeMent finished the game with a career-best 65 yards on five receptions.
CASHING OUT: The Green Terror won the turnover battle on Saturday – something it had done since the first two weeks of last season. However, more importantly, McDaniel was able to turn two of the three takeaways into touchdowns. Ray Doh's fumble recovery resulted in a touchdown before Keegan Romanoff returned an interception for a score. On the other side, after both Green Terror turnovers, the defense held and forced a punt and turnover on downs.
TERROR TIDBITS: McDaniel recorded seven pass breakups on Saturday – its most since also tallying seven against Moravian on Sept. 14, 2013… Spencer Wiersberg (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) missed his first collegiate field-goal attempt on Saturday, snapping a streak of 11 straight to start his career… The Green Terror controlled the ball for more than 36 minutes last week.
COACHES' CORNER: Mike Dailey is in his first season at the helm of the Green Terror after seven seasons as an assistant on the staff. He enters today's game with an overall record of 0-1. Dailey joined the Green Terror staff in 2009 with a pedigree of success at all levels of football that included compiling a record of 115-83 and two championships in 12 years as a head coach in the Arena Football League (AFL), leading the Albany Firebirds and Colorado Crush that included winning league titles in 1999 and 2005. For his first six seasons on the McDaniel sidelines, he served as defensive coordinator. His scheme put pressure on opposing quarterbacks game-in and game-out, recording 101 sacks and 55 interceptions. He helped produce 12 All-Centennial Conference selections, including four first-team nods. In 2015, Dailey shifted responsibilities to the offensive side of the ball – something he is renowned for from his days in the AFL. He spent last season coordinating the pass game and working specifically with the wide receivers… Jeff Pukszyn is in his sxith season as the head coach at Moravian after serving 10 years as assistant head coach. He enters today's game with a record of 20-32. After three 2-8 campaigns in his first three seasons, the Greyhounds posted a 5-5 mark in 2014. In 2015, the squad finished 8-3 with a trip to the Centennial-MAC Bowl Series. He joined the staff as a part-time coach in 1997 after a three-year playing career under former head coach and recently retired Director of Athletics Scot Dapp that saw him named to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference first team in 1994 and 1996. The two-time captain joined the staff full time in 1999 as defensive coordinator, a position he retains as the head man.
THE WORD ON MORAVIAN: The Greyhounds enter today's conference opener off a 50-35 victory over King's on Saturday… Moravian scored 16 straight points in a 5-minute, 47-second span en route to a 33-14 halftime lead… Mike Hayes was named CC Co-Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 354 yards and three touchdowns. He was 23-for-37 passing and also carried the ball seven times for 24 yards… Kenny Kane was named CC Special Teams Player of the Week after hitting all three of his field-goal attempts (33, 25, 21) and going 5-for-6 on extra-point attempts… Aaron Hudson caught just three passes from Hayes but covered 90 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns… Liam Nolan and Jalen Snyder-Scipio each caught six balls… Chris Negron ran for 116 yards and a touchdown… Negron returns to the backfield after rushing for 1,425 yards last season. He was the only 1,000-yard rusher in the CC a year ago… Hayes threw for 2,217 yards with 16 touchdowns as a junior… The Greyhounds return their top four receivers from last season… John Snyder led the defense in the opener with eight tackles, including 2.5 for loss and a sack. He also had a pass breakup… Moravian has never lost a CC game to McDaniel in Bethlehem, winning all four such meetings since joining the league in 2007. The Green Terror's lone win at Moravian a 12-0 triumph in 1979.
