Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic rallied from a 21-6 deficit to defeat McDaniel 28-21 in overtime in season-opening football action on Saturday.
Ray Doh (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) led the Green Terror (0-1) on defense with seven tackles, including two for loss, and two pass breakups. John Chamberlin (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) led the offense with 75 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown.
Jorge Pola completed 23 of 43 passes for the Cardinals (1-0), throwing for 246 yards in his first start at quarterback.
On the fifth play of Catholic's half of the first overtime, Pola found Morley in the back-left corner of the end zone. The extra point gave the hosts a 28-21 lead.
McDaniel moved the ball to a first-and-goal at the four-yard line in its overtime but could not convert the tying score.
Pola pulled the ball back on a quarterback keeper to cap a 8-play, 57-yard drive with a 19-yard run up the middle with 11:41 to play. Catholic missed the ensuing PAT to keep it a 6-0 game.
Matthew Callahan (Germantown, Md./Northwest) engineered a 12-play drive that covered 75 yards in 5 minutes, 34 seconds on McDaniel's first drive of the second quarter. The senior found classmate Tyler DeMent (Olney, Md./Northwest) from 12 yards out. The Spencer Wiersberg (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) extra point made it a 7-6 game with 8:54 to play.
After a punt late in the third quarter, Shane Douglass (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) met the Cardinals in the backfield, forcing a fumble. Doh came up with the ball, giving the Green Terror possession at the Catholic 12 with 1:01 to play in the third quarter.
Three plays later, Chamberlin bounced to the right and found the pylon for a 13-6 lead with five ticks remaining in the period. Wiersberg stretched the lead to eight with the PAT.
On a second and 10 from the Cardinal 16, Keegan Romanoff (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) hauled in a tipped pass and returned the interception 30 yards for a 21-6 lead with 8:43 to play. It was the Green Terror's first interception returned for a score since Nov. 12, 2011 at Johns Hopkins.
Jake Marcelino recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown, closing the deficit to 21-13 with 3:26 to play.
A Joe Taylor III catch right at the sticks to convert a fourth down kept a drive alive and led to a Morley 17-yard touchdown reception to cap an 8-play, 76-yard drive with 1:05 to play.
Morley then hauled in the two-point conversion to knot the game at 21-all.
The Green Terror opens the Centennial Conference schedule at Moravian on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
