OPENING KICKOFF: Today's Centennial Conference (CC) game marks the 69th meeting between McDaniel (1-3, 1-2 CC) and Gettysburg (1-3, 1-2 CC) in a series that dates back to 1891. The Bullets lead the all-time series 50-18-1, including a 45-17 win last season. The last Green Terror victory was by a 36-30 margin in 2010.
WHEN LAST WE MET: Last season, Gettysburg scored 35 straight points to break open a 10-all game en route to a 45-17 victory over McDaniel. Matt Cathey (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial Regional) led the Green Terror, establishing a career best with 88 yards rushing to go with his second collegiate touchdown. Kyle Wigley led the Bullets with 184 yards rushing and two scores.
LAST TIME OUT: McDaniel scored the final 10 points of the game to defeat Ursinus 30-27 and snap its 22-game losing streak last week. Spencer Wiersberg (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) hit a career-long 43-yard field goal as time expired for the win. Will Koester (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) threw for a career-best 314 yards. Salvatore Bello led the Bears with a 23-for-36 day through the air, throwing for 235 yards.
HEAD OF THE CLASS: Spencer Wiersberg was named the CC Special Teams Player of the Week last week after kicking the game-winning field goal. He finished the day 3-for-3 in field goals and 3-for-3 in extra points. His other two field goals were from 26 and 25 yards. His game-winner was a career-long 43 yards and was McDaniel's longest field goal since 2006.
WITH HONORS: Will Koester and Claude Richardson (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) were named to their respective CC Weekly Honor Rolls last week. Koester earned a spot on the offensive list after throwing for a career-best 314 yards. He completed 29 of 48 passes with a pair of touchdowns. Richardson was tabbed to the defensive ledger after recording 12 tackles last week. He also had an interception with 33.9 seconds remaining that set up the winning field goal.
LEADING THE WAY: Tyler DeMent (Olney, Md./Northwest), Vince Gorgone (Clarksville, Md./Good Counsel) and Matt Quattrone (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) will captain the squad in 2016. This is the second straight year Quattrone has served as a captain while DeMent and Gorgone are first-time captains.
NO STREAKING ALLOWED: With Spencer Wiersberg's game-winning field goal as time expired last Saturday, multiple double-digit streaks were snapped by the Green Terror. McDaniel entered the weekend with the fourth longest active losing streak in Division III at 22 games. It was also the second longest losing streak in program history. The win also snapped a 15-game skid at Gill Stadium. Prior to Saturday's victory, the last time the Green Terror won in front of the home crowd was Sept. 14, 2013 with a 21-14 win over Moravian. It was McDaniel's first conference victory in 21 tries, snapping an 0-for-20 stretch that dated back to a 43-42 win at Susquehanna on Nov. 9, 2013. Finally, it snapped a 10-game winning streak in the series by Ursinus. The last Green Terror win over the Bears came on Oct. 1, 2005 by a 28-20 margin in Westminster.
FOR THE WIN!: Spencer Wiersberg booted a career-long 43-yard field goal to lift McDaniel to a 30-27 victory last Saturday. It was the longest field goal for the Green Terror in nearly 10 years. On Oct. 7, 2006, Jay Leonard lined up in nearly the exact same spot with the game tied at 14-all against Gettysburg. He sailed a 46-yarder through the same uprights with 2.7 seconds left to give McDaniel the victory. Wiersberg's winning kick was the third game-winning kick by the Green Terror in the last 10 years. No other conference program has more in the final five seconds of regulation during that time. Neil DeLuca had the other game-winning kick, sending his team to a 22-20 win at Gettysburg with a 20-yard field goal On Nov. 7, 2009.
300-LEVEL CLASS: Will Koester turned in his first career 300-yard passing game last Saturday. The junior signal caller went 29-for-48 through the air for 314 yards. It was the sixth time in his career he had thrown for 200 or more yards in a game. Only five other Green Terror quarterback have had more 200-yard games in their careers.
DOING IT WITH DEFENSE: McDaniel broke up eight passes in last week's game. However, none was bigger than Ray Doh's (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) in the final minute. The junior tipped a pass at the line that Claude Richardson was able to get under and grab for his first collegiate interception. He finished the day with 12 tackles to go with the interception that set up the game-winning field goal.
CATCHING ON: Three Green Terror receivers had six or more receptions on Saturday. Bamasa Bailor (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) hauled in a career high-tying seven grabs for 76 yards. He had one of the biggest catches of the day, hauling in a 15-yard completion on fourth-and-12 to move McDaniel into field-goal range. Andre Henry Jr. (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and Breon Herbert (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) each nabbed six passes. Henry led the way with a career-high 93 yards. It was the most yards by a Green Terror receiver this season. Herbert's six grabs and 69 yards receiving were both career highs. He also had both touchdown grabs, including a 11-yard score with 1:00 to play.
RUNNING WITH A PURPOSE: Perry Stefanelli (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) kept balance in the offensive attack. The junior netted a career-best 96 yards on a career-high 20 carries. He did not lose a yard on any of his touches. He also caught a pair of passes out of the backfield and had five returns to give him 188 all-purpose yards – also a career best.
TERROR TIDBITS: Saturday's win was the Green Terror's first on Family Weekend since 2009… McDaniel will look to snap another double-digit losing streak today and win on the road for the first time in 12 games… The Green Terror has had 14 different players catch a pass this season… Keegan Romanoff (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) has 12 tackles this season – all solo stops… McDaniel leads the league in time of possession, holding the ball for an average of 32:54 each game.
COACHES' CORNER: Mike Dailey is in his first season at the helm of the Green Terror after seven seasons as an assistant on the staff. He enters today's game with an overall record of 1-3 after registering his first win last week with a 30-27 victory over Ursinus. Dailey joined the Green Terror staff in 2009 with a pedigree of success at all levels of football that included compiling a record of 115-83 and two championships in 12 years as a head coach in the Arena Football League (AFL), leading the Albany Firebirds and Colorado Crush that included winning league titles in 1999 and 2005. His scheme put pressure on opposing quarterbacks game-in and game-out, recording 101 sacks and 55 interceptions. He helped produce 12 All-Centennial Conference selections, including four first-team nods. In 2015, Dailey shifted responsibilities to the offensive side of the ball – something he is renowned for from his days in the AFL. He spent last season coordinating the pass game and working specifically with the wide receivers… Barry Streeter, the dean of CC coaches, is in his 38th season guiding the Bullets. His 191-182-5 record not only ranks best amongst those to guide Gettysburg but is also the second most wins of anyone to coach in the conference. Mike McKnight and Joey DeChristofaro had 11 stops each… Davidov is the Bullets' leading rusher on the season. In addition to throwing for 676 yards and nine scores, he has also run the ball 50 times for 307 yards and four touchdowns. He ranks sixth in the conference among all rushers… Four Gettysburg receivers have nine or more catches this season. Ryan Thompson leads the way with 11 catches for 185 yards… Ty Abdul-Karim has three of the team's 12 receiving touchdowns… Skinner leads the defense with 37 tackles… Gettysburg is 1-3 for the first time since 2010.
