Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – St. Mary's (Md.) closed the first half on an 8-1 run en route to an 18-8 victory over McDaniel in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
Emily Brownawell (Sparks, Md./Oldfields) led the Green Terror (1-2) with two goals and an assist, including having an hand in all three goals to help stake McDaniel to an early 3-0 lead.
Shelby Newman led the Seahawks (3-0) with four goals while Tori Poffenberger added three goals and four assists.
Trialing 3-0, Abbey Harrison got St. Mary's on the board with 12:00 to play in the first half, sparking a flurry of goals to close the stanza.
An Ashley Lawrence goal two minutes alter and pair of Newman goals 1:30 apart put the Seahawks in front with 5:22 to play.
Lindsey Farrell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) converted a free-position shot with 4:31 on the clock to draw the game level once again.
A goal and assist from Poffenberger keyed a four-goal run in the final 2:54 of the half to open up an 8-4 edge at the break.
The Seahawks scored the first five goals of the second half to push the lead to 12-4 with 18:14 to play.
Unassisted tallies by Olivia Geiger (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) and Maggie Quinn (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) fewer than three minutes apart trimmed the margin to 12-6 with 13:27 remaining.
Ali Collie and Meg Gesner responded, however, with markers 1:49 apart to push the lead back to eight.
Quinn added her second goal of the day on a free-position attempt with 8:07 remaining.
Megan Quattrone (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) registered her first collegiate tally with 2:01 to play before Megan Cannon set the final score with 20 ticks remaining.
Brownawell scored 1:11 apart to stake the Green Terror to a 2-0 lead just 2:03 into the game before the sophomore found Geiger for a 3-0 lead with 25:49 to play.
Bethany Ray (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) picked up five ground balls while Allison Farrell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) added four ground balls and two caused turnvoers.
McDaniel returns to action at Shenandoah on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
