Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Waynesburg shot 50 percent on the night to key a 78-73 victory over McDaniel in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South women's basketball tournament on Wednesday.
Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) led the Green Terror (21-7) in her final career game with 27 points. She finished her standout career with 1,398 points to rank third in program history, which included a program-record 557 points this season. She also swished five 3-pointers on the night to finish with a program-record 82 this season.
Heather Davis led the seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets (15-13) into the semifinals with 28 points. Waynesburg will take on Stevenson in one of Saturday's semifinals at top-seeded Washington & Jefferson.
Trailing 58-54 just 90 seconds into the fourth quarter, Davis hit one of her five triples to cut the deficit to one with 8:09 to play, sparking an 8-2 burst.
Davis made it back-to-back 3-pointers, pulling up on the break after a McDaniel turnover.
Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) hit a driving layup to tie the game at 60-all with 7:17 to play.
A Kassidy O'Keefe free throw and 3-pointer around a Davis layup gave the visitors a 66-60 lead less than a minute later.
A Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) layup and Nichols 3-pointer closed the deficit to one with 5:41 remaining but Lauren Blair and Addy Knetzler each hit layups to push the lead back to five.
The Green Terror closed to within 70-69 on two Smith free throws with 3:09 to play but the Yellow Jackets went 9 of 12 from the charity stripe in the final 1:50 to pull away for the five-point win.
After a back-and-forth first three minutes, Smith hit a pair of free throws with 4:45 on the first-quarter clock to spark an 8-0 run that gave the hosts an 18-11 lead en route to a 20-13 edge after one period.
Davis hit a layup and 3-pointer to open the second quarter, closing the deficit to 20-18 just 34 seconds into the frame.
McDaniel once again opened up a seven-point edge but a Davis layup with 2:48 to play sparked an 8-0 run to close the half. A Monica Starre putback jumper at the top of lane as time expired gave Waynesburg a one-point lead at the intermission.
A Nichols 3-pointer and Sarah Bach (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) layup quickly turned the deficit into a four-point lead just 1:06 into the third quarter.
Blair and Davis, however, canned back-to-back triples before Knetzer hit a layup on the break and Davis converted a three-point play to account for an 11-0 run that spanned just 1 minute, 58 seconds.
The Green Terror closed the period with five straight points to draw within 53-52.
Zeps finished the night with 21 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) dished out eight assists to go with 11 points, closing her career with 418 helpers to rank second all-time.
