Knadler strikes gold in 50 free

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Syd Knadler (Crowley Lake, Calif./Mammoth) earned her first gold medal to lead McDaniel at the 2016 Centennial Conference (CC) women's swimming championship hosted by Gettysburg on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Green Terror finished seventh as a team with 250 points, etching three program records along the way. Ursinus won its third straight conference title, with 846 points to top Gettysburg by 186.5 points.

Knadler was part of all three records for McDaniel on the weekend that included her winning 50 free race on Friday night. After posting the fastest time in the prelims with a mark of 24.13 seconds, the junior took the time down to 24.04 to win by 0.27 seconds. She became the first Green Terror swimmer to win the event at the CC Championship.

Knadler also anchored the 400 medley relay later in the night to seventh-place finish. Cara Dube (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran), Kelly Lewis (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mills and Samantha Smith (Bangkok, Turkey/International School of Bangkok) joined Knadler to turn in a program-record time of 4:02.70.

On Saturday night, Knadler joined Shannon McClellan (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro), Becca Sykes (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) and Joanna Wattenberg (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) to also post a seventh-place finish in the 800 free with a program-record time of 8:01.52.

Knadler also added four more top-10 all-time performances on the weekend. Individually, she qualified sixth in the 100 free with a time of 53.30 before improving to fourth in Sunday night's finals with a time of 53.28, which ranks second all-time – just 0.04 seconds shy of the program record.

Knadler, Smith and Lewis joined Emily Gross (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) to open Friday night's session with a fourth-place showing in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:39.39, which ranks third all-time.

Knadler and Gross also joined McClellan and Wattenberg to close the weekend with a fifth-place finish in the 400 free relay. The quartet's time of 3:38.67 ranks second all-time.

Dube, Lewis, Smith and Knadler turned in the No. 5 all-time time in the 200 medley relay, finishing fifth with a time of 1:49.84.

McClellan qualified ninth in the 200 free before winning the consolation final with a time of 1:56.81 to improve her No. 2 all-time mark by nearly a second on Saturday.

On Friday, McClellan reached the championship final of the 500 free, posting a time of 5:09.93 in the prelims to rank fifth entering the finals. That's where she finished with a time of 5:09.13.

On Sunday, McClellan finished 10th in the 1650 free with a time of 18:11.04.

Lewis reached the consolation final in both breaststroke events. She qualified 11th in the 100 with a time of 1:09.14 before finishing 13th with a time of 1:10.40. In the 200, she qualified 12th (2:31.08) and finished 14th (2:29.74).

Dube made it to the consolation finals of both backstroke events. On Saturday, she qualified 14th in the 100 with a time of 1:01.81 before finishing 15th with a time of 1:01.47, which ranks sixth all-time. On Sunday, she qualified 13th in the 200 (2:12.30) and finished in that same position with a time of 2:11.78, which ranks fourth all-time.

Smith also appeared in a pair of consolation finals on Saturday night. In the 100 fly, qualified 10th with a time of 59.79 seconds before finishing 11th (1:00.00). She also qualified 16th to take the last spot in the 100 back finals with a time of 1:02.14. In the finals, she improved to 12th with a time of 1:01.06, which ranks third in program history.

Wattenberg rounded out a trio of new top-10 marks in the 100 backstroke. Her time of 1:02.83 (18th) is eighth all-time.

Sykes finished 18th in the 1650 free with a time of 19:15.15, which ranks seventh all-time.

Carly Deickman (Bishopville, Md./Stephen Decatur) and Elisa Santoni (Ellicott City, Md./McDonogh) also notched places on all-time top-10 lists with their performances in prelims.

Deickman cracked the top-10 in the 100 breaststroke, just missing the finals with a time of 1:11.85. Santoni was 24th in the 200 backstroke but her time of 2:18.16 ranks ninth all-time.
