Nichols nets 15 points in OT win

HAVERFORD, Pa. – McDaniel outscored Haverford 21-13 in the fourth quarter and overtime to record a 53-50 win in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.

Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) led three starters in double figures for the Green Terror (19-4, 14-2 CC) with 15 points. She also added five rebounds and five steals.

Olivia Walsh paced the Fords (14-9, 9-7 CC) with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Trailing 37-32 entering the fourth quarter, Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) drained a 3-pointer with 9:07 showing and Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) hit two free throws with 7:17 on the clock to even the game.

A Sarah Bach (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) gave McDaniel its first lead since the first quarter, capping the 7-0 run to start the period.

A pair of Berkel free throws drew the hosts back even with 4:23 remaining in regulation before a Macy Goldbach free throw and Darby Festa putback gave Haverford a 42-39 lead with 2:12 showing.

A Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) 3-pointer once again leveled the scored before Samantha Wetzel hit two free throws with 26 seconds remaining.

Zeps hit a floater in the lane to tie the game at 47-all in the final five seconds and Haverford's attempt to win in regulation was off the mark.

Two Katie Cook free throws and a Berkel putback jumper staked the Fords to a 48-44 lead 2:04 into the extra period.

Another Davis triple and two Nichols free throws gave McDaniel a 49-48 edge with 1:55 to play.

Davis hit a second-chance jumper with 1:02 to play for a three-point edge before Walsh and Nichols traded a pair of free throws in the final 52 seconds to set the final margin.

Back-to-back Zeps jumpers staked McDaniel to a 4-0 lead 2:45 into the game.

The lead swelled as large as five on three occasions before the Fords tallied 10 straight points to open up a 14-9 lead.

An Amanda Wood (Ashburnham, Mass./Cushing Academy) 3-pointer closed the deficit to two at the end of the frame.

Haverford, however, outscored Haverford 17-6 in the second quarter, including a 10-0 run to turn an 18-16 edge with 5:21 remaining into a 28-16 advantage 2 minutes, 27 seconds later.

Trailing 31-18 at the break, Nichols hit back-to-back jumper to trim the margin to single digits just 1:29 into the third quarter.

A Walsh 3-pointer extended the lead back to 12 but a Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) free throw with 7:44 on the clock sparked a 10-0 run.

Goldbach hit a triple with 1:17 remaining to make it a 37-32 game and snap a 6-minute, 39-second drought.

Zeps finished with 12 points and eight rebounds while Davis added with 10 points and three steals.

McDaniel returns to action at Washington (Md.) on Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
