OPENING KICKOFF: Today's Centennial Conference (CC) game marks the 95th meeting between McDaniel (3-6, 3-5 CC) and Johns Hopkins (9-0, 8-0 CC) in a series that dates back to 1894. The Blue Jays lead the all-time series 54-35-5, including wins in the last 15 meetings. The Green Terror's last win in the series came by a 41-7 margin in 2000. Today's game marks the 69th consecutive season when the two long-time rivals have been scheduled to be the final game on each other's schedules.
WHEN LAST WE MET: Johns Hopkins, ranked eighth by d3football.com at the time, took a 28-10 lead at halftime en route to a 49-24 win over McDaniel to close the 2015 regular season. Mike Oliveto completed his career for the Green Terror with 13 catches to finish with the program records for a career (169) and season (63) receptions. His 13 catches was two shy of the program record for a single game. Oliveto recorded 107 receiving yards on the day, including a 39-yard touchdown. Stuart Walters ran for 103 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Blue Jays, who wrapped up the outright CC title and won their 31st straight regular-season game for a new conference record.
LAST TIME OUT: Susquehanna took a 24-0 lead into halftime en route to a 37-20 victory over McDaniel last Saturday. Perry Stefanelli (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) led the Green Terror with 143 yards rushing on 18 carries and a touchdown. Luke Robertson paced the River Hawks with 202 yards on the ground, running the ball 32 times and two touchdowns.
WITH HONORS: Perry Stefanelli and Cole Branche (Hampton, Va./Voorhees) were named to their respective CC Weekly Honor Rolls last week. Stefanelli earned a spot on the offensive ledger after leading the Green Terror offense with 143 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. In addition to averaging nearly eight yards per carry, he also had 129 yards in the return game and one catch for three yards for a career-best 275 all-purpose yards. Branche was tabbed to the defensive list after leading the defense with a career-best 11 tackles to go with a pass breakup on Saturday.
LEADING THE WAY: Tyler DeMent (Olney, Md./Northwest), Vince Gorgone (Clarksville, Md./Good Counsel) and Matt Quattrone (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) will captain the squad in 2016. This is the second straight year Quattrone has served as a captain while DeMent and Gorgone are first-time captains.
TRIPLE DOUBLE: Three Green Terror defenders each recorded double-digit tackles last week. Cole Branche led the way with a career-best 11 stops. Matt Quattrone added 11 tackles for his fifth career double-digit tackle game but first since the 2015 opener. Drew Scott (Brick, N.J./Brick Twp.), who had recorded eight tackles in each of the previous three games, added 10 stops. Scott had not had 10 or more tackles in a game since Sept. 12, 2015. It marked the first time this season that multiple players had at least 10 tackles in the same game. In fact entering Saturday, the McDaniel defense had notched just two individual double-digit tackle performances as a unit – both by Claude Richardson (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair).
RUNNING WITH THE PERRY: Perry Stefanelli broke through for McDaniel's first big rushing performance of the season. The junior tailback exploded for his first career 100-yard rushing day. He finished with 143 yards rushing on 18 carries. He also found the end zone for the first time since Sept. 24. His day keyed the Green Terror's best running day of the year. As a team, McDaniel went over 200 yards for the first time in 12 games. The Green Terror had not rushed for more than 170 yards as a team all season (Sept. 5 at Catholic). Stefanelli also added 129 yards on eight kickoff returns to finish with a career-best 275 all-purpose yards. It was the second straight week that he went over 200 all-purpose yards.
FULL RECOVERY: Ray Doh (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) recovered his third fumble of the season on Saturday. He is one of 43 Division III football players with three or more recoveries this season. Lynchburg's Mike Ward has five and only four other players have recovered four. Doh recovered fumbles in each of the first two games of the season but had not had one since. The three individual fumble recoveries marks the most by a Green Terror player since 1998. As a team, McDaniel's eight recovered fumbles ranks 80th in Division III.
DEEP THREAT: Breon Herbert (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) grabbed his fourth touchdown grab of the season as time nearly expired on Saturday. He hauled in a 36-yard pass from Will Koester (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) for the touchdown. Of his four scores this season, three have been 24 yards or longer. All three of his receptions of 20 yards or longer this season have gone for six points. He hauled in a 24-yard grab against Ursinus before scoring from 58 yards against Dickinson. All four of his touchdowns this season have also come at home.
WHAT A BOOT: In his first season as the starting punter, senior Doug MacArthur (Roebling, N.J./Florence Twp. Memorial) is averaging 38.3 yards per punt. He has punted 46 times this season, dropping 13 kicks inside the 20-yard line against just one touchback. He has also forced 13 fair catches. MacArthur's 38.3-yard average ranks 58th among all Division III punters. As a unit, the Green Terror is fourth in the conference, gaining a net of 33.3 yards per boot.
TERROR TIDBITS: Junior Bamasa Bailor (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) has caught four touchdown passes in the last three games. He entered the second half of this season with two career touchdown grabs… Kiree Moore (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) made five tackles in his first collegiate start at cornerback last week… McDaniel has had 18 different receivers catch a pass this season. The starting trio of Bamasa Bailor, Andre Henry, Jr. (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and Breon Herbert have accounted for 117 of the team's 187 catches (62.6 percent), however.
COACHES' CORNER: Mike Dailey is in his first season at the helm of the Green Terror after seven seasons as an assistant on the staff. He enters today's game with an overall record of 3-6. His first win came on Sept. 24 with a 30-27 victory over Ursinus. Dailey joined the Green Terror staff in 2009 with a pedigree of success at all levels of football that included compiling a record of 115-83 and two championships in 12 years as a head coach in the Arena Football League (AFL), leading the Albany Firebirds and Colorado Crush that included winning league titles in 1999 and 2005. For his first six seasons on the McDaniel sidelines, he served as defensive coordinator. His scheme put pressure on opposing quarterbacks game-in and game-out, recording 101 sacks and 55 interceptions. He helped produce 12 All-Centennial Conference selections, including four first-team nods. In 2015, Dailey shifted responsibilities to the offensive side of the ball – something he is renowned for from his days in the AFL. He spent last season coordinating the pass game and working specifically with the wide receivers… Jim Margraff is in his 27th season at Johns Hopkins. The all-time winngingest coach in program history, he has compiled a record of 198-84-3 in his tenure with the Blue Jays. After earning a share of three consecutive conference titles, Margraff led Johns Hopkins to its first outright claim to the title and NCAA tournament bid in 2005 and once again took the outright crown in 2009 and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. In 2010, the squad once again shared the CC title before taking the outright title again in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. The Blue Jays have also claimed four ECAC titles in his tenure. Margraff is also the state of Maryland's all-time wins leader when he picked up career win No. 175 in 2014. His team holds conference record for consecutive regular-season wins (40) and consecutive conference victories (36) – both of which remain active entering play today.
THE WORD ON JOHNS HOPKINS: The Blue Jays, ranked ninth in this week's D3football.com poll and seventh in the AFCA rankings, enter today's game off a 48-28 win at Franklin & Marshall to secure at least a share of their eighth straight CC title. Johns Hopkins has also already secured the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and can claim its sixth straight outright title with a win today... The Blue Jays enter today's game with a 40-game regular-season winning streak and 36-game conference winning streak – both of which broke the Green Terror's conference records from 1997-99… Johns Hopkins has scored fewer than 40 points just twice this season and that came in back-to-back weeks against Moravian (29 on Sept. 17) and at Muhlenberg (30 on Sept. 24). The Blue Jays enter today's game, averaging a conference-best 42.9 points per game. It is one of nine offensive categories in which the squad paces the CC… Jonathan Germano is completing 63.5 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,494 yards through the first nine games. He has 23 touchdown tosses… Five Johns Hopkins receivers have no fewer than 300 yards receiving this year. Quinn Donaldson has a team-best six touchdowns. Brett Caggiano leads the squad with 599 yards receiving on 23 catches. He has five touchdowns… On the ground, Ryan Cary leads the way with 887 yards on 142 carries. He has found the end zone 13 times on the ground… The Blue Jays are scoring at a 96 percent clip when they get into the red zone, including scoring touchdowns on 34 of 47 trips.
