ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Samantha Smith (Bangkok, Thailand/International School of Bangkok) won three times to lead McDaniel in a double dual meet at St. Mary's (Md.) with Ferrum in women's swimming action on Saturday.
Scoring:
- The Green Terror (2-3) swept the double-dual format. McDaniel defeated St. Mary's (Md.) (0-5) 117-80 and Ferrum (3-8), 141-41.
Head of the Class: The following athletes won multiple events at the meet:
- Cara Dube (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran), Kelly Lewis (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill), Samantha Smith and Joanna Wattenberg (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) won the 400 medley relay (4:14.16).
- Individually, Smith won the 50 freestyle (25.73 seconds) and 150 butterfly (1:43.73).
- Individually, Wattenberg won the 200 freestyle (2:07.00).
- Individually, Dube won the 150 backstroke (1:40.69).
- Individually, Lewis won the 150 breaststroke (1:53.09).
- Syd Knadler (Crowley Lake, Calif./Mammoth) won the 200 IM (2:17.56) and 100 freestyle (54.95 seconds).
Precious Metal: The following athletes finished second or third in an event at the meet:
- Becca Sykes (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) finished second in the 800 freestyle (9:10.27) and 400 freestyle (4:33.49).
- Cara Dube finished second in the 200 freestyle (2:10.26).
- Juliann Rossi (Marriottsville, Md./McDonogh) finished second in the 200 IM (2:24.29).
- Sara Hegna (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) finished second in the 150 backstroke (1:40.90) and third in the 200 IM (2:27.83).
- Kelly Lewis finished third in the 50 freestyle (26.41 seconds).
- Joanna Wattenberg finished third in the 100 freestyle (58.25 seconds).
- Carly Deickman (Bishopville, Md./Stephen Decatur) finished third in the 150 breaststroke (1:55.77).
- Hegna, Deickman, Rossi and Knadler also teamed to finish second in the 400 medley relay (4:18.29).
For the Foes: The following St. Mary's and Ferrum athletes won events at the meet:
- Elizabeth Valenti (St. Mary's) won the 800 free (9:00.76) and 400 free (4:28.51).
- Rachel Yates, Carolyn Sutton, Samantha Schoenecker and Elizabeth Straathof (St. Mary's) won the 400 free relay (3:55.59).
