Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – For the third time in the last five days, McDaniel found itself trailing going to the fourth quarter. For the third straight time, the Green Terror rallied for a victory, defeating Swarthmore 69-63 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.
Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) led McDaniel (12-3, 7-1 CC) with a career-best 20 points. Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) also reached the 20-point mark for fourth straight game, matching Davis with 20 points to with 10 rebounds for her second double-double in the last three contests.
Jessica Jowdy led all scorers, pacing the Garnet (3-12, 2-7 CC) with 28 points. She added 10 rebounds for her own double-double.
Trailing 50-45, Davis hit a 3-pointer 1:02 into the fourth quarter to draw the visitors within two.
After Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) and Raina Williams traded baskets, Smith canned another jumper with 6:49 on the clock to even the game at 52-all.
That basket sparked a 9-0 run, including five straight points from Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) in a 70-second span.
Abbey Deckard snapped a nearly four-minute scoring drought to trim the deficit to 59-55 but a Sarah Bach (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) layup and two Nichols free throws extended the lead to its largest at eight.
Williams and Hayley Raymond scored a basket each to once again make it a four-point game but McDaniel made six of its eight free throws in the final 47.6 seconds to secure the victory.
Jowdy staked Swarthmore to a 4-0 lead in the first 85 seconds of the game before Davis canned a triple with 8:01 on the clock.
A pair of breakaway by Jowdy and Maggie O'Neill extended the hosts' advantage to five.
Jowdy made it a 19-12 game before Amanda Wood (Ashburnham, Mass./Cushing Academy) answered trey-for-trey to make it a four-point game at the end of the first period.
McDaniel scored 10 of the first 12 points in the second quarter to take a 25-22 lead on two Zeps free throws with 7:15 showing before Jowdy scored seven straight points to key a 17-5 answer that opened up a 39-30 lead.
Three points from Zeps in the final 46 seconds closed the margin to 39-33 at the break but the Garnet scored four straight points out of the locker room for the only double-double advantage of the day.
The Green Terror closed to within one on two occasions over the remainder of the period before a Jowdy triple and Williams free throw made it a five-point edge with 10 minutes to play.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Washington (Md.) on Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
