Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Catholic scored 21 of the game's final 24 points to rally for a 34-33 non-conference football victory over McDaniel in the season opener for both teams on Saturday.
Garrett Diehl (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) led the defense for the Green Terror (0-1), making 13 tackles in his debut with the squad. He also had an interception. Matty Callahan (Germantown, Md./Northwest) went 22-for-34 through the air for 271 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 52 yards on the ground.
T.J. Tutone threw for 356 yards and four touchdowns for the Cardinals (1-0), completing 35 of 51 passes that included a 49-yard strike to Lucas Morley for the game-winning score with 13.2 seconds left. Morley caught 13 passes for 210 yards and all four scores.
McDaniel took a 23-14 lead into the fourth quarter before Callahan hit Marty Windisch (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) in stride from 32 yards out for the senior's first career touchdown with 13:02 to play in the game.
After converting a pair of fourth downs, Tutone hit Morley for an 18-yard touchdown with 10:05 showing to trim the deficit to 30-21.
The Catholic defense forced a three-and-out to give the offense the ball back at their own 20 with 8:07 to play.
The McDaniel defense forced a three-and-out but a muffed punt gave the Cardinals the ball right back at the McDaniel 21. Three plays later, Tutone and Morley connected a nine-yard score to make it 30-28 with 6:12 remaining.
The Green Terror drove into Catholic territory before the drive stalled and McDaniel was forced to punt.
On a third-and-15 from its own 24, Tutone hit Brayden Massie but Zack Ralli (Derwood, Md./Good Counsel) jarred the ball loose and Raymond Doh (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) picked up the ball and returned it to set up his offense at the 15-yard line with 1:41 on the clock.
After three runs netted four yards, McDaniel was forced to settle for a third Spencer Wiersberg (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) field goal. The sophomore converted the 27-yard attempt to push the lead to five with 42.0 seconds left.
The Cardinals took over at their own 35 with just 35.0 seconds showing. Tutone hit Tim Murphy for 16 yards before Morley ripped away a would-be interception and sprinted down his own sideline, breaking tackles for the go-ahead score. The ensuing two-point conversion would fail.
Wiersberg staked McDaniel to a 3-0 lead, hitting a 27-yard field goal with 5:25 to play in the first half.
Tutone and the Cardinals responded, going 88 yards in nine plays to take a 7-3 lead on a Matt McMahon run with 2:21 on the clock.
Matt Cathey (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial Regional) broke a 20-yard run on the first play of the second quarter and then scored his first collegiate touchdown one play later from 10 yards out for a 10-7 advantage.
A Wiersberg 29-yard field goal pushed the lead to 13-7 with 5:35 to play in the first half.
Callahan hit John Chamberlin (Franklinville, N.J./Williamstown) on a screen pass that the sophomore tailback took 58 yards for a touchdown with 3:00 to play in the first half, giving the hosts a 23-7 lead.
Morley cut the deficit to 23-14 with the score of the third quarter, catching a nine-yard touchdown with 57 ticks remaining in the period.
McDaniel finished the day with 513 yards of total offense, outgaining the Cardinals by 58 yards overall. The Green Terror ran for 242 yards and threw for 271.
Chamberlin ran for 37 yards and caught another four passes for 73 yards.
The Green Terror opens the Centennial Conference schedule at home against Moravian on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
