Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Widener scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to break a 4-all deadlock and defeat McDaniel 7-5 in the championship game of the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southeast baseball tournament on Sunday.
Nick Valori (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) led the Green Terror (19-15) with three hits on the day, including his 100th career knock in just two seasons with the team. Marty Windisch (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) also had three hits and threw eight innings on the mound with five strikeouts with a no-decision.
Justin Healey led the Pride (25-20) with two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run double in the ninth inning to break the deadlock and earn Most Outstanding Player honors.
Trailing 4-3, Valori led off the bottom of the eighth with a single through the left side before being erased on a fielder's choice.
After Brandon Hayward (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) stole second, he advanced to third on a fly out to the wall in left field and scored on a Tyler O'Shea (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) bouncing single through the left side to even the game and get Windisch off the hook.
Michael Rytelewski led off the top of the ninth with a single before the sacrifice bunt attempt went right back to the mound and McDaniel was able to get the lead runner for the first out.
Nicholas Enos followed with a single to put runners at first and second.
After a strikeout for the second out, Healey sent a ball to deep center for a double, scoring both runners.
Greg McDonough followed with a double of his own to the deepest part of the park to make it a 7-4 game.
Sean Sivo (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) beat out an infield single to lead off the bottom of the inning before Windisch and Cameron Bahr (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) were both hit by pitches to load the bases.
A ground ball resulted in a double play but also allowed Sivo to score to make it a two-run game but Robert Barth got a strikeout to pick up the win in relief.
A throwing error on a bunt attempt allowed Bob Barnett to reach second to lead off the game before a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly staked Widener to a 1-0 lead.
The Pride tacked on a second run in the second with a Kyle Lowery one-out single and Justin Czupryna two-out double.
Windisch led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple before scoring on a Bahr RBI groundout.
Valori doubled down the left-field line with two outs before scoring on a Hayward single up the middle to even the game at 2-all.
A two-out throwing error, Healey triple and McDonough double once again put Widener back in front 4-2 in the fifth.
An O'Shea single led off the home seventh before Windisch greeted a new Widener pitcher with a single through the left side.
Bahr followed with a single up the middle to plate O'Shea from second and draw the hosts within 4-3.
