Sivo manufactures extra-inning walkoff

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel rallied with a run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings before capping the season sweep of Gettysburg with a 5-4 win in the bottom of the 10th in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Friday.

Sean Sivo (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) manufactured the winning run for the Green Terror (16-12, 9-7 CC), who will enter Saturday's finale at Ursinus in the thick of the playoff race. McDaniel can assure itself a playoff berth with a doubleheader sweep of the Bears. The Green Terror – winners of seven straight – could also make a postseason appearance with a split, pending other results on the final day of the regular season.

Sivo drew a walk to lead off the 10th inning before McDaniel failed to get the sacrifice bunt down. On the first pitch with one out, however, Sivo swiped second base, sliding in under the tag.

After the Bullets (20-12, 9-7 CC) then elected to intentionally walk Cameron Bahr (Southampton, N.J./Seneca), Gettysburg got to two strikes on the next batter.

Sivo took off for third on the pitcher's first movement but was hung up between second and third on a pickoff attempt. The ensuing throw to third baseball sailed high and to the fence in left field, allowing Sivo to sprint for third, round the bag and raced home with the winning run.

In addition to Sivo's two-hit day, Marty Windisch (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) led the way with three hits to give him a program-record 50 on the season.

John Convery led the Bullets with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

After both starting pitchers – Eric Hungerford for Gettysburg and Zach Kronick (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland) – faced the minimum through four innings, Will Anderson led off the fifth inning with a double to right field.

A two-out Cody Karagjozi single to the gap plated Anderson with the game's first run.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Tyler Gilbert (Severn, Md./Glen Burnie) poked a single through the right side.

Nick Valori (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) followed with a single to left field before Gilbert was lifted for pinch-runner Chad Nazelrod (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley).

Kasey Nelson (Denton, Md./St. Michael's) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Brandon Hayward (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett), who singled back up the middle to score Nazelrod and Valori for a 2-1 lead.

Sivo led off the eighth inning with a single before stealing second and taking third on an errant throw.

Windisch followed with a double to plate Sivo for a 3-1 advantage.

Leading off the ninth, Convery sent a ball to deep right field that floated just over the right fielder, who fell backwards into the fence and to the ground. Convery alerted turned it into an inside-the-park home run.

After a Connor Tom single, sacrifice bunt and walk put runners at first and second with one out.

After a double-play ball was bobbled at second base, all three runners were safe and Miike Kielbasa singled to left field to score two runners for a 4-3 edge.

A throwing error allowed Nelson to reach with one out in the bottom of the ninth before he was lifted for pinch-runner Mitchell McVerry (Westminster, Md./Westminster). Hayward followed with a a single before Tyler O'Shea (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) sliced a single to right field to score McVerry and tie the game.

With runners at second and third, the Green Terror attempted to end the game on a suicide squeeze but popped up the bunt for a double play.

Kronick finished with eight strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. Hayward and O'Shea added two hits each.

The first game of Saturday's doubleheader begins at 12:30 p.m.
