Box Score 2 WESTMINSTER, Md. – Haverford pounded out 26 hits in a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.
The Fords (7-15, 3-6 CC) took game one by a 6-1 margin before completing the sweep with a 14-6 win in the nightcap.
Cameron Bahr (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) led the Green Terror (9-11, 2-6 CC) with three hits and three RBIs in the twinbill.
Tommy Bergjans powered Haverford to the win in the opener, fanning 13 batters in eight innings after allowing a first-inning run. Ben Verducci led the offense with six hits in the two games.
Sean Sivo (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the first before stealing second and taking third on a groundout.
On a ball put in play by Bahr, Sivo got caught in a rundown before eventually sliding into home safe under the tag for a 1-0 lead.
Matt Goss drew a walk to lead off the fourth inning – the first baserunner allowed by Zach Kronick (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland) – before Verducci singled to put runners at the corners.
A Spencer Sohmer one-out single plated Goss to tie the game before Mike Schmandt roped a triple to the gap for a 3-1 lead.
A Goss two-out walk and Verducci double made it a 4-1 game in the fifth.
Three straight singles from Ben Furlong, Goss and Verducci stretched the lead to 5-1 in the seventh before Schmandt drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Goss and cap the scoring.
Brandon Hayward (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) led the Green Terror in game one with two of the squad's five hits.
Goss and Verducci each singled to lead off game two before a Casey Fox two-run single staked Haverford to a 2-0 lead.
Sohmer followed with a single of his own before Yannick Yillanueva roped a two-run single of his own with one out for a 4-0 lead.
Mitchell McVerry (Westminster, Md./Westminster) reached on a bunt single to lead off the home third before stealing second.
Sivo drew a one-out walk before an error allowed McVerry to score. Bahr followed with a double to trim the deficit to 4-3.
A Tyler Gilbert (Severn, Md./Glen Burnie) single and balk tied the game before Kasey Nelson (Denton, Md./St. Michael's) singled home Gilbert with two outs for a 5-4 lead.
The Fords, however, responded with five runs in the fourth inning. Goss had a two-run single to key the frame.
Back-to-back singles from Nick Valori (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) and Nelson trimmed the margin to 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth but Haverford got the run back on a Fox leadoff home run in the sixth.
The Ford tacked on four runs in the seventh that included a two-run homer from Sohmer with two outs.
Nelson finished game two with three hits while Bahr had two.
The Green Terror returns to action at Johns Hopkins on Sunday. Game time is 2 p.m.
