Jacobs tallies five goals

WESTMINSTER, Md. – St. Mary's (Md.) scored five straight goals late in the second half to topple McDaniel 16-14 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Julia Jacobs (Stevensville, Md./St. Mary's) led the Green Terror (2-1) with five goals and an assist.

Tori Poffenberger registered seven goals to pace the Seahawks (3-0), who remained undefeated on the young season.

Trailing 12-11 when Mallory Michel (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) capped a three-goal burst in 4-minutes, 26-seconds, Poffenberger finished a solo run to even the game with 12:22 on the clock.

Poffenberger then hit Shelby Newman 26 seconds later before Poffenberger found the back of the net again with 8:32 showing.

Erika Kopf and Poffenberger finished solo runs 2:41 apart to push the lead to 16-12 with 2:04 remaining.

Unassisted markers from Danielle Entrot (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Maggie Quinn (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) closed the final deficit to two with 17 seconds left.

Jacobs finished feeds from Quinn and Entrot in the game's first three minutes to stake the hosts to a 2-0 lead before Poffenberger tallied twice to even the game nearly four minutes later.

After Sam Barbeito (Wolfsville, Md./Middletown) momentarily put the Green Terror back in front, Poffenberger and Abbey Harrison countered to give St. Mary's a 4-3 edge.

Jacobs found the back of the net then hit Entrot for a 5-4 advantage with 14:02 to play in the opening half.

The teams traded marker before Meg Gesner scored with just seven ticks remaining in the first half to even the game at 7-all.

Back-and-forth two-goal stretches put the Seahawks in front 11-9 with 17:32 showing before Jacobs made it a one-goal game 50 seconds later.

Emily Brownawell (Sparks, Md./Oldfields) finished a solo run to even the game.

McDaniel finished with a 35-24 advantage in shots. Quinn added four caused turnovers, three draw controls and three ground balls to her two goals and one assist.

McDaniel returns to action at Messiah on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
