Box Score 2 WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel used extra innings to earn a doubleheader split with Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference (CC) baseball opener for both teams on Saturday.
The Green Terror (7-6, 1-1 CC) took the opener 2-1 in 12 innings before the Diplomats (10-4, 1-1 CC) responded with a 10-4 victory in game two.
Sean Sivo (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) led McDaniel with four hits across the twinbill and added three runs scored.
David Iacobucci led Franklin & Marshall with five hits.
Knotted at 1-all with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning, Brandon Hayward (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) doubled to left field.
After an error put runners at the corners, freshman Antonio Rosanova (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) singled down the line to score Hayward with the game-winning run to give the Green Terror its first extra-inning victory since the 2009 season opener when McDaniel defeated Scranton 12-11 in game two of the doubleheader. It snaps a streak of 11 straight extra-inning losses for the Green Terror.
Sivo led off the bottom of the first with a single before taking second on a groundout and stealing third. He scored on a Marty Windisch (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) RBI single through the right side with one out.
Dan Marano led off the top of the sixth with a single before scoring a Mike Smeriglio one-out single to center field to tie the game.
Alex Guerra and Zach Kronick (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland) battled in the pitchers' duel. Guerra went the first nine innings for Franklin & Marshall with seven strikeouts while Kronick fanned three in six innings. David Pisauro (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) also struck out three, throwing the final five innings to pick up the win.
In the nightcap, Casey Bulik led off the third inning with a double before Brett Poniros beat out a bunt and Marano singled for a 1-0 lead.
Poniros scored on a double play before a wild pitch allowed Marano to come home for a 3-0 lead.
The Green Terror closed to within 3-2 with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. Rosanova reached on an error to lead off the inning before Sivo walked.
After a sacrifice, Windisch singled home Rosanova and Tyler Gilbert (Severn, Md./Glen Burnie) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Sivo.
F&M sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the seventh, scoring five times. An infield single and back-to-back bunt hits loaded the bases to start the inning before three singles and a fielder's choice scored the five runs.
The Diploamts tacked on two runs in the top of the eighth before a Windisch RBI single and Gilbert sacrifice fly set the final margin in the bottom of the eighth.
Windisch also finished with four hits while Hayward had a pair of baseknocks in the nightcap.
The Green Terror returns to action at Hood on Monday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
