Knadler grabs pair of medals

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Syd Knadler (Crowley Lake, Calif./Mammoth) added two more medals to her collection to lead McDaniel at the 2015 Centennial Conference (CC) women's swimming championship hosted by Gettysburg on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Green Terror finished sixth as a team with 323 points, leaving the weekend with three program records and nearly 30 new top-10 entries in the record book. Ursinus won its second straight conference title, winning the final relay to outdistance Franklin & Marshall with 667.5 points.

Individually, Knadler took second in the 50 free finals with a time of 24.16 seconds. She actually swam faster in the morning prelims on Friday but entered the finals seeded third with her program-record time of 24.08 seconds.

Knadler also led off the 200 free relay on Friday evening, joining Kelly Lewis (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mills), Samantha Smith (APO, AP, Thailand/International School of Bangkok) and Kerrin Holmes (Avondale, Pa./Avon Grove) to earn the bronze medal with a  time of 1:38.22.

Smith posted the other individual program record, finishing fifth in the 100 butterfly prelims. She became the first Green Terror swimmer to break 60 seconds in the event with a her time of 58.91. She dropped to eighth in the finals with a time of 1:00.21.

Knadler qualified 12th in the prelims of the same event with a time of 1:00.24 before joining her freshman teammate in the sub-60 club, posting a time of 59.91 seconds to finish 10th overall.

Lewis, Smith and Knadler also joined Cara Dube (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) to finish seventh in the 400 medley relay on Friday night, closing the session with a program-record time of 4:02.74.

The same quartet opened Saturday night's session in the 200 medley relay, posting a time of 1:49.24 to rank second in program history. The B relay also finished on the all-time top-10 list. Meg Protzman (Elkridge, Md./Mount de Sales), Bryn Blanchard (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley), Lexie Jacobs (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) and Holmes finished 12th overall with a time of 1:53.90, which ranks 10th all-time.

Knadler also finished sixth in the 100 free with a time of 53.53, a time which ranks second all-time.

Holmes and Smith also qualified for the finals in the 50 free. Holmes was 12th (25.05 seconds) in the prelims before falling to 16th (25.67) in the finals. Smith moved into fourth place all-time with a 13th-place showing in the prelims (25.07) before improving to 11th in the finals (25.12).

Protzman and Lewis missed the finals but still posted top-10 all-time times. Protzman was 19th in the event but moved into eighth place all-time with a time of 25.37. Lewis finished 20th, ranking ninth all-time with her time of 25.39.

Shannon McClellan (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) qualified sixth in the 500 free with a time of 5:10.21, which ranks second all-time in program history. She was sixth in the finals as well (5:10.23). She was also 11th in the 200 free on Saturday (1:58.42) and 10th in the 1650 on Saturday (18:15.32).

Jacobs made the consolation finals of both the 200 and 400 IM races, posting the third-best time in program history in both events. In the 200 on Friday, she qualified 11th with a time of 2:13.84 before finishing 12th in the finals (2:14.43). In the 400 on Saturday, she won the consolation final to finish ninth with a time of 4:43.70 – more than two seconds over 10th place.

Lewis turned in a pair of top-three all-time marks in the two breaststroke events. She qualified fifth in the 100 on Saturday with a time of 1:08.25, which is third all-time. She fell to seventh (1:09.00) in the finals. In the 200 on Sunday, she finished seventh with a time of 2:28.66, which is second all-time, after qualifying sixth.

Jacobs became the beneficiary of a medical default in the 200 breaststroke. After qualifying ninth in a time of 2:31.16, she was moved into the championship final and finished eighth with a time of 2:32.16. Her prelim time ranks fifth all-time.

Maddie Gamble (Colora, Md./Rising Sun), Knadler, McClellan and Holmes closed the weekend with a sixth-place finish in the 400 free relay, posting the No. 2 time in program history with their combined mark of 3:38.93.

Gamble, Jacobs, Holmes and McClellan posted the No. 3 time in the 800 free relay on Saturday with a time of 8:04.90.

Blanchard finished ninth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.76, which ranks fourth all-time. She was also 18th in the 200 breaststroke, turning in the No. 9 time all-time (2:38.43).

Gamble also posted a No. 4 all-time mark on the week, finishing 11th in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:14.08. She also broke in the top 10 in both the 100 and 200 free. She finished 19th in the 200 with a time of 2:01.01 and was 23rd in the 100 free with a time of 56.08 seconds.

Juliann Rossi (Marriottsville, Md./McDonogh) qualified 10th in the prelims of the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:32.79, which ranks eighth all-time. She dropped to 13th in the finals with a time of 2:35.91. Rossi also posted the No. 7 time in program history in the 200 IM, just missing the finals with her 17th-place time of 2:17.89.

Smith and Dube also found their way into the consolation finals of the 100 backstroke. Smith finished 12th with a time of 1:01.69 while Dube was 14th with a time of 1:02.52. Smith's time ranks fifth all-time while Dube's time is eighth.

Becca Sykes (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) placed 20th in the 1650 with a time of 19:21.26, which ranks eighth all-time.
