Nichols, Zeps combine for 39 points

YORK, Pa. – York (Pa.) watched a 12-point second-half lead evaporate before surviving overtime to top McDaniel 74-69 in the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament on Sunday.

Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) led the Green Terror (3-1) with 21 points while Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) added 18. Nichols earned a spot on the all-tournament team for her play over the weekend.

Sam Hruz paced the Spartans (4-0) with 18 points, leading four players in double figures.

Nichols converted a three-point play on the opening possession of overtime.

After Sarah Shearer and Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) traded baskets, Juliane Lambert hit a layup to spark an 8-0 burst over just a 1-minute, 19-second stretch.

Morgan Kuehne converted a layup on the break and Hruz and Karli McFatridge each hit both free throw attempts to give the hosts a 71-66 lead with 1:02 showing and seal the victory.

Two layups from Katie Wagner helped York jump out to a 6-2 advantage in the first 1:31 of the game.

A layup and 3-pointer from Nichols around a Wagner layup closed the deficit to 10-9 with 5:30 showing.

Two free throws from Zeps gave McDaniel an 11-10 edge with 4:51 showing before Wagner responded with a triple to put the Spartans back on top.

York scored six of the final seven points in the period to open up a 19-15 edge.

A 5-0 burst stretched the Spartans lead to 26-19 with 5:39 to play in the second quarter.

After Smith and Sam Mocniak traded baskets, a Nichols jumper and Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) three-point play closed the deficit to two just 1:54 later.

Four points from McFartridge keyed a 7-0 run for York before Davis canned a triple from the top of the arc with 32 seconds showing to close the deficit to 35-29 at the break.

A Zeps layup and Davis 3-pointer off a Nichols steal and long pass closed the deficit to 41-38 with 6:18 to play in the third quarter.

Behind six points from Kuehne, the Spartans reeled off 11 of the next 13 points before Nichols and Zeps each hit layups in the final 30 seconds of the period to close the margin to 52-44 at the end of the quarter.

Nichols canned a triple in the corner to start the fourth quarter to make it a five-point game.

A Smith 18-foot jump shot with 7:42 to play coupled with a Smith free throw and two makes by Zeps at the charity stripe with 6:25 to play gave McDaniel a 55-54 edge.

Out of a timeout with 37.5 seconds left, Smith picked up a loose ball and hit a leaner at the left elbow to give McDaniel a 61-60 edge with 18.4 seconds left.

With 13.3 seconds left, Hruz was fouled after grabbing her own rebound. She made the first free throw to draw the hosts even at 61-all but missed the second free throw to send the game to overtime.

Davis and Smith added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for McDaniel. Davis also had four assists while Nichols had five steals. Sarah Bach (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) led the way on the glass with nine rebounds.

The Green Terror opens the Centennial Conference schedule at home against Dickinson on Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
