Brinley scores in NCAA tourney

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Oneonta built a 2-0 lead early in the second half en route to a 3-1 victory over McDaniel in the first round of the NCAA Div. III women's soccer tournament hosted by Carnegie Mellon on Saturday.

Erin Brinley (DeWitt, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) scored the lone goal for the Green Terror (15-3-2) in the program's first-ever NCAA tournament appearance.

Jessica Lyden led the Red Dragons (15-3-2) with a goal and an assist.

After beating her defender, Lyden headed home a pass from Kayla Ceschini for a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.

Oneonta doubled the lead just 1:34 into the second half. Lyden found Amanda Roney, who chipped a ball over the keeper for a 2-0 lead.

Off an Abby Keen (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) free kick in the 69th minute, Brinley headed home the ball to cut the deficit in half.

The Red Dragons needed just 73 seconds to go back up by two. Taylor Messina beat her defender and fired low at the far post for a 3-1 advantage at the 69:35 mark.

McDaniel finished with a 10-7 edge in shots and both teams took one corner kick.

Kelley Murphy made three stops in the first half for Oneonta to keep the Green Terror off the board.
