Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Juniata scored three times from two yards or fewer to record a 20-7 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) football action on Saturday.
Perry Stefanelli (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) led the Green Terror (0-8, 0-7 CC) with 59 yards rushing and a touchdown. He also caught two passes for 12 yards. Will Koester (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) had his second 200-yard passing game in three starts, throwing for 233 yards on 23-for-46 passing.
Matt Lehr led the Eagles (3-5, 2-5 CC) with 87 yards rushing, including the game-clinching touchdown with 2:47 to play.
Trailing 13-7, McDaniel drove inside the Juniata 1 with fewer than six minutes to play in the third quarter before a fumble gave the ball back to the Eagles. A penalty after the play moved the ball out to the 17-yard line.
Back-to-back sacks at the end of the quarter forced a punt to start the fourth period but neither team could muster a sustained drive until the Eagles took over on a muffed punt with 7:48 to play.
A heavy dose of Lehr chewed more than five minutes off the clock before the tailback found the end zone on the ninth play of the drive, capping a 46-yard march with 2:47 to play.
McDaniel had moved into Juniata territory on its next possession but a John Michael Maclay interception with 1:01 to play sealed the win.
After the teams traded punts to start the game, the first of two muffed punts set the Eagles up at the McDaniel 41 with 9:24 to play in the first quarter.
Hank Coyne found Deonte Alston for 34 yards to set up first-and-goal from the four-yard line. Three plays later, Alston found the end zone from one yard out for a 7-0 lead.
Koester engineered a nine-play drive early in the second quarter.
After Stefanelli threw a block on a blitz that allowed Koester to find Sean Montgomery (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) for a 30-yard gain, Stefanelli took the ball on the next play and scored from 20 yards out to draw the hosts even with 11:48 on the clock.
A 49-yard reception by Hunter Phillips set up the Eagles inside the one-yard line before Alston scored two plays later to make it 13-7 with 4:41. After a snap infraction on the PAT pushed the attempt back five yards, Juniata missed to keep it a six-point game.
McDaniel had a chance to cut the deficit in half before the break but a 45-yard field goal was tipped at the line.
Luke Fernandez (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) led the defense with 10 tackles and three pass breakups. Matt Quattrone (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) added nine stops.
The Green Terror finished with a 354-299 advantage in total offense, including 233-133 through the air.
McDaniel returns to action at Susquehanna on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
