Brooks opens season with three wins

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Swarthmore won 10 of the 14 events to notch an 87-35 win over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) and men's swimming season opener for both teams on Saturday.

Brad Brooks (Newark, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) led the Green Terror (0-1, 0-1 CC) with three wins.

Jeff Tse led the Garnet (1-0, 1-0 CC) with three wins, including a pair of Harlow Pool records. Andrew Steele also won three times with one pool record. The duo was half of the winning 200 medley relay, which turned in a time of 1:38.14 to open the meet. Tse also won the 100 backstroke (51.75 seconds) and 200 breaststroke (2:11.66) in pool record time. Steele won the 50 free in a pool record time of 21.50 seconds. Steele also anchored the 200 free relay to victory (1:28.43).

Brooks won the two distance races in addition to the 200 butterfly. He turned in a time of 9:44.40 in the 1000 free before winning the 200 fly in a time of 2:00.18 and the 500 free in a time of 4:47.21.

Justin Allen (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) also recorded an individual victory, touching first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.22 seconds.

McDaniel's 200 medley relay of Paul Van Nevel (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville), Allen, Michael Brant (Wilmington, Del./Cab Calloway School of the Arts) and Logan Linden (Ocean View, Del./Indian River) teamed to finish third with a time of 1:41.50 but turned in the No. 6 time in program history.

Van Nevel etched his name on two more top-10 lists in his collegiate debut. He placed second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.11 to debut at fifth place on the all-time list. He was also third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:03.58 to also rank fifth all-time.

Van Nevel was also less than a half-second from breaking into the top 10 of the 200 IM list, placing second in the event with a time of 2:04.65.

Allen added a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:16.66.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Ursinus on Saturday, Nov. 14. Meet time is 1 p.m.
