Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Susquehanna scored the final 14 points of the game to top McDaniel 24-16 in Centennial Conference (CC) football action on Saturday.
Brandon Jones (Middle River, Md./Eastern Tech) led the Green Terror (1-8, 0-8 CC) on defense with 12 tackles and forced a pair of fumbles. He also had one pass breakup. On offense, Nick O'Melia (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) led the way with nine catches for 137 yards and a touchdown. Matty Callahan (Germantown, Md./Northwest) recorded his fifth 200-yard passing game, completing 27 of 41 passes for 262 yards.
Ian Richardson led the Crusaders (2-7, 2-6 CC) with 113 yards rushing and a touchdown. He also threw an eight-yard score. Nick Crusco went 23-for-31 for 246 yards.
After McDaniel held Susquehanna to a three-and-out to start the third quarter, Tayahd Campbell (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) ran three straight times for 16 yards to set up first down at the Green Terror 40.
Callahan connected with O'Melia for a 47-yard strike to move the ball to the Crusader 13.
After a one-yard Campbell run, Billy Adkins III (Delmar, Del./Delmar) snagged his first collegiate reception inside the one-yard line.
Campbell punched the ball in for a 16-10 lead with 10:06 to play in the third quarter but McDaniel failed to convert the extra point.
Two Richardson 12-yard runs and a pair of Crusco midrange completions coupled with a roughing-the-passer penalty keyed a seven-play, 75-yard drive.
Crusco found Pat Murtha with a two-yard touchdown to even the game with 7:19 to play and Spencer Hotaling converted the ensuing PAT for a 17-16 advantage.
After the two teams traded punts, Callahan engineered a 12-play drive. A 21-yard catch by Bamasa Bailor (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) on second-and-21 set up a first down at the Susquehanna 16.
After a three-yard run and back-to-back incompletions, McDaniel attempted a 30-yard field goal from the left hash but it was wide left.
Taking over with 11:09 to play, Crusco hit Pat Murtha on a swing pass for 33 yards on the first play after the missed field goal to move the ball to near midfield.
Facing fourth-and-4, Crusco scrambled for a seven-yard gain and a late hit penalty was assessed to set up first down at the 19-yard line. Two plays later, Richardson found the end zone to stretch the lead to 24-16 with 7:55 on the clock.
The Crusaders forced a punt on the next McDaniel possession and then six Richardson runs moved the ball into Green Terror territory before Drew Scott (Brick, N.J./Brick Twp.) picked up a fumbled snap to give his offense the ball at midfield.
A John Chamberlin (Franklinville, N.J./Williamstown) five-yard run and four Callahan completions set up first-and-goal at the Susquehanna 8.
However, Phil Pecora knocked the next pass attempt up in the air and Kyle Prpich dove to make the grab at the 13-yard line.
A conversion on the ensuing third-and-1 sealed the victory.
A 31-yard Crusco-to-Murtha pass play keyed an eight-play, 68-yard drive that ended with a Hotaling 18-yard field goal and 3-0 lead with 36 ticks remaining in the first quarter.
The teams traded three-and-outs before Jones forced a fumble at the Green Terror 46 that Luke Fernandez (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) was able to pick up to give his offense the ball.
Campbell tiptoed the sideline for a 25-yard run to set up first-and-goal before Callahan hit O'Melia on third down for a touchdown and 7-3 lead with 4:35 showing in the second quarter.
A 13-play, 86-yard march on the next Susquehanna possession ended with an eight-yard Richardson-to-Kwane Hayle touchdown for a 10-7 lead with 49 seconds showing.
Callahan connected with O'Melia immediately for 35 yards to move the ball to the Susquehanna 37.
On the next play, Callahan scrambled for nine yards but was hit late out of bounds to move to ball to the 14.
After a short gain and two incomplete passes, Spencer Wiersberg (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) was called upon to convert from 27 yards and did so with just six seconds showing to knot the game at 10 at the half.
Campbell ran for 57 yards to lead the running game for McDaniel. Scott, Nick Marino (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Twp.) and Matt Quattrone (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) each finished with eight tackles.
The Green Terror concludes the season at No. 8 Johns Hopkins on Saturday. Game time is 12 p.m.
