OPENING KICKOFF: Today's Centennial Conference (CC) game
marks the 37th meeting between McDaniel (1-2, 1-1
CC) and Ursinus (3-0, 2-0 CC) in a series
that dates back to 1976. The Bears have won the last seven meetings
but the Green Terror leads the all-time series, 24-12-1.
WHEN LAST WE MET: Ursinus scored the first 10 and last 14 points
of the game to bookend a 40-21 CC victory over McDaniel last
season. Joe Rollins
(Temple Hills, Md./Surrattsville) amassed a career-best
362 all-purpose yards to lead the Green Terror, running for 223
yards on 15 carries and recording another 139 on four kickoff
returns. Chris Curran threw for 224 yards and
three touchdowns to lead the Bears, who outgained McDaniel 435-415
on the day but held a 303-132 advantage at halftime.
LAST TIME OUT: Muhlenberg scored on its second offensive play en
route to a 58-0 CC victory over McDaniel last Saturday. Joe
Rollins led the Green Terror with his third 100-yard
rushing game of the season, running for 123 yards on 21 carries. He
also caught three passes for eight yards and returned three
kickoffs for 91 yards to amass 222 all-purpose yards. The Mules
rolled up 505 yards of total yards on offense, including 264 yards
passing by Nick Palladino, completing 23 of 29 attempts. He also
ran for 70 yards while Thomas DiCarlo added 86 rushing yards.
WITH HONORS: Brett Haas
(Laurel, Md./Atholton) was named to the CC Weekly Honor
Roll last week. Haas earned the special teams nod after punting the
ball six times for a total of 250 yards to average 41/7 yards per
punt. He unfurled three punts of 50-plus yards.
LEADING THE WAY: Mike Cousar
(Easton, Pa./Easton Area), Derrick Miles
(Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin), Mike Oliveto
(Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser), Joe
Rollins and Pat Tighe (Point
Pleasant Beach, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) will captain
the squad in 2013. All five are first-time captains and mark the
most since 2009.
BOOTING IT: Brett Haas may have had the best
day of any Green Terror player last Saturday. The sophomore punter
averaged a career-best 41.7 yards on his six punts. After his first
two punts traveled a combined 60 yards (32 and 28, respectively),
he unfurled three punts of 50-plus yards. He entered the game with
just one punt of more than 50 yards – a 56-yarded in his
debut at Catholic last season. His third punt of the day traveled
51 yards before his next punt was blocked. The next two punts off
Haas' right foot boomed for 50 and 54 yards before he finished the
day with a 35-yarder.
MANY HAPPY RETURNS: So far in 2013, opponents have done their
best to keep kickoffs away from senior return specialist
Joe Rollins. However, last week at Muhlenberg,
Rollins was still able to get his hands on three kickoffs, racking
up 91 returns yards in the process. For the season, he now has five
returns for 112 yards, averaging 22.4 yards per return. Seven other
Green Terror players have taken a kickoff return, returning 14
kicks for a total of 182 – a 13.0-yard-per-return
average.
RETURN TO SENDER?: In week three of the season, McDaniel did not
have an opportunity to return a punt. However, the only difference
between last Saturday and the first two weeks of the season was the
lack of an opportunity to return punts. The Green Terror still does
not have a single yard in the punt return game. Only once has a
McDaniel returner even attempted a return. Opponents have punted 11
times. Of the 10 non-attempt at returns, three were fair caught and
the rest either went out of bounds or were touched down by the
kicking team.
ROLLINS ALONG: Joe Rollins ran for another 123
yards last Saturday to notch his third 100-yard rushing game of the
season. The senior leads the CC with 460 yards through the first
three games of the season. He is also seventh in all of Division
III in rushing yards. His 209.0 all-purpose yards ranks eighth in
Division III. For his career, he now has 3,727 rushing yards and
enters this week's game trailing Eric Frees '92 by 1,554 yards for
the program record.
PICKING IT: In addition to leading the team with 30 tackles this
season, Mike Cousar also has both of the Green
Terror interceptions this season, picking off a pass in each of the
last two games. However, those specific efforts on defense have not
had the opportunity to lead to any points. Against Moravian, he
intercepted a pass in the final 20 seconds of the game to seal the
victory and allow the offense to lineup in victory formation for
one play. Against Muhlenberg, his interception came in the final 10
seconds of the first half, an – after a 33-yard return
– time expired, not allowing the offense even a single snap.
Those are McDaniel's only two takeaways this season while the
offense has turned the ball over nine times. Despite the minus-7
turnover margin, the Green Terror defense has only allowed 14
points to be scored off the nine turnovers.
YOUTH MOVEMENT: The Green Terror will
enter the regular season with a roster of 96 players. Of those 99
players, 64 are either freshmen or sophomores. McDaniel will have a
freshman class of 41 in 2013 – by far its largest class on
the roster.
TERROR TIDBITS: Joe Rollins notched his 18th
100-yard rushing game. The only Green Terror player with more in
program history is all-time leading rusher Eric Frees (28)…
Last Saturday's 58-0 loss was the worst in program history since
falling 66-0 at Wake Forest on Oct. 21, 1939… McDaniel has
not scored in its last six quarters… The Green Terror is the
most penalized team in the league (23) and has drawn the second
most flags in the CC (21).
COACHES' CORNER: Mike Hoyt is in his second
season at the helm of the Green Terror, entering today's game with
an overall record of 1-12 after picking up his first win on Sept.
14 – a 21-14 victory over Moravian. He spent the previous
eight seasons as the defensive coordinator, culminating with being
a finalist for the American Football Coaches Association Assistant
Coach of the Year award in 2011. In his first season at Albright,
his defense went from allowing an average of 235.4 yards per game
to 175.1 yards per contest, helping to guide Albright to an ECAC
South Atlantic championship. His tenure as defensive coordinator
was marked specifically by stout run defense, ranking in the top
half of the Middle Atlantic Conference in rush defense, total
defense and scoring defense in four of his last five seasons. His
2008 defense led the conference and ranked 33rd nationally,
allowing just 16.9 points per games and appeared in the ECAC South
Central Bowl… Peter Gallagher is in his
13th season at Ursinus. He has posted a 63-62 mark at the helm of
the Bears, including a 6-4 record in his first season (2001),
marking the first time an Ursinus coach registered a winning season
in his first year. In 2006, Gallagher added offensive coordinator
to his duties and recorded the most successful campaign in his
tenure at 8-3. In 2010, he guided the Bears to a share of the
Centennial Conference title. Prior to his arrival in Collegeville,
he served as the defensive coordinator at the University of
Rochester in addition to successful stints at Dartmouth, Wagner and
Georgetown.
THE WORD ON URSINUS: The Bears enter today's game off a 20-9
victory over Franklin & Marshall last Saturday… The
Diplomats jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Ursinus drew within 9-6
at the break on the first of two Chris Curran
touchdown runs. The Bears outscored Franklin & Marshall 14-0
after the intermission, including Curran breaking off a 57-yard run
with 7:28 to play… Ursinus finished the game with a 404-279
advantage in total offensive, including outgaining the Diplomats
215-86 on the ground… Jason Golderer ran
for 118 yards on 30 carries while Curran added another 82 yards on
11 runs… Golderer ranks second in the conference in rushing
with 408 yards on a CC-high 93 carries. He is tied for third in the
conference with four rushing touchdowns… Jerry
Rahill has 15 receptions for 177 yards while Josh
Williams has caught nine balls for 229 yards.
