Messersmith tallies four and four

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel scored three times in the game's first two minutes en route to an 18-1 victory over Cazenovia in the first round of the 2013 ECAC Mid-Atlantic women's lacrosse tournament on Wednesday.

Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) led the Green Terror (10-8) with four goals and four assists, including as a part of each of the game's first five goals.

Kim Vrigian scored the lone goal for the Wildcats (9-9), breaking up the shutout with 18:15 to play.

Messersmith found Monica Parcell (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) just 18 seconds into the game before finishing a solo run to double the advantage 33 seconds later.

With 28:00 on the clock, Bridget Bopst (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) found Messersmith for a 3-0 lead.

Back-to-back Messersmith-to-Danielle Entrot (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) pushed the lead to 5-0 with 22:49 remaining.

Entrot completed the natural hat trick 52 seconds later, finishing a Parcell feed.

Goals from Samantha Barbeito (Myersville, Md./Middletown) and Kaitlin Mahoney (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) with two more Messersmith tallies pushed the lead to double digits with 12:36 showing in the first half.

Entrot finished from Messersmith with 1:50 remaining and Mahoney converted a free-position shot in the final 18 seconds to make it a 12-0 game at the break.

A Barbeito free-position tally 2:30 into the second half pushed the lead to 13-0.

Maggie Quinn (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) helped push the lead to 15 with 25:51 to play, finding Madi Elie (Olney, Md./Sherwood) before scoring 34 seconds later.

Sarah Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Frankin) found Barbeito with 24:27 showing before scoring off a Mallory Michel (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) assist 2:31 later.

Vrgian broke up the shutout before Kerry Campbell (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) tallied her first collegiate goal with 8:01 on the clock for the final margin.

Parcell recorded four caused turnovers while Barbeito had three for the Green Terror, who finished with a 32-7 advantage in shots.

McDaniel, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, returns to action at home against Morrisville State, the No. 3 seed, in the first of two semifinals at McDaniel on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m. with Lebanon Valley and FDU-Florham to follow. The semifinal winners meet on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the title.
