Chiorello, Jones go the distance

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – McDaniel got a pair of complete-game efforts from its two starting pitchers to key a doubleheader sweep of Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.

James Chiorello (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) went the distance in game one, fanning nine for the Green Terror (15-9, 4-2 CC) in a 2-1 victory. Zach Jones (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) matched Chiorello with a complete-game effort, striking out four in a 3-0 shutout.

Joe Fiore (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Beach) and Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) each had two hits in the opener while Pat Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) went 3-for-4 in game two.

Danny Usewick led the Mules (14-11, 2-4 CC) with a combined four hits in the two games.

In game one, John Muha led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle before scoring on a Kurt Johnson double one batter later.

After a walk and Nick Plinio single loaded the bases, Chiorello got a ground ball for the out at home and a pair of strikeouts looking to prevent further damage.

The offense responded in the top of the season.

With two outs, Fiore singled to left before a pair of errors allowed Tyler Ferretti (Hillborough, N.J./Hillsborough) and Sean Sivo (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) to reach and load the bases.

Jackow singled to left, scoring Fiore and Sivo for a 2-1 lead before getting thrown out at second to end the inning.

From there, the pitchers settled in, allowing just nine combined hits and 11 base runners the rest of the way.

In the nightcap, both pitchers worked in and out of trouble through the first four innings before a two-out Brandon Hayward (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) bomb over the left-field fence broke up the double shutout.

Christopher led off the eighth with a single before Cameron Bahr (Southampton, N.J./Seneca), who had his 20-game streak of reaching base snapped in game one, reached on an error to put runners at the corners.

Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) followed with a double to the gap to score Christopher. Bahr was cut down at the plate to keep it a 2-0 game.

A Fiore sacrifice fly scored Betts, who took third on the play at the plate, for the 3-0 final.

McDaniel returns to action at home against No. 11 Johns Hopkins on Tuesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
