Jones Ks 10 for strikeout record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Needing six strikeouts to tie a 42-year-old record, senior Zach Jones (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) did that to lead off the fifth inning and took the mark by himself an inning later en route to a 10-strikeout game and a McDaniel sweep of Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.

Behind Jones' complete-game effort, the Green Terror (21-15-10-8 CC) took the opener 5-3 before completing the sweep 8-1 to reach the 20-win mark for the second straight season.

Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) led the offense with a six-hit twinbill, adding five RBIs.

James Hoff paced the Bears (7-27, 3-15 CC) with three hits in game one.

In a scoreless game, Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) led off the fourth inning with a single before a Marty Windisch (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) single put two on with no outs.

Betts followed with a double to score both runners for a 2-0 lead.

A fielding error allowed Jonathan McKinney (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) to reach to lead off the fifth before a Sean Sivo (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) sacrifice moved him to second.

A Jackow single put runners at the corners before Windisch singled home McKinney for a 3-0 advantage.

After a passed ball, Betts singled home Jackow and Pat Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) singled to load the bases.

A Cameron Bahr (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) sacrifice fly scored Windisch for a 5-0 lead.

Jones followed the top of the inning up with his sixth strikeout of the game and the 212th of his career to match Bob Merrey (1968-71) for the program record.

With two on and one out in the sixth, Jones took control of the record by himself. His 10 strikeouts on the day gives him 216 for his career while improving to 9-1 on the year.

Three straight one-out singles loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth before a Chris Jablonski two-run single and James Hoff RBI knock closed the deficit to 5-3.

After a walk reloaded the bases, Jones got a groundout then worked around an error and hit batter in the ninth for the win.

In the nightcap, Brad Hampton (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) led off the visitor third with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice.

A Sivo single put runners at the corners before a balk allowed Hampton to score for a 1-0 lead.

Windisch led off the sixth with a single before scoring on an Andrew Hofmeister (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) two-out double for a 2-0 lead.

Jablonski led off the home seventh with a single before taking second on a sacrifice. An Alex Manacher single scored Jablonski to cut the deficit in half but Gio Fricchione (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern) worked out a bases-loaded jam to keep starter Andrew Monger (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) in line for the win.

Jackow led off the eighth with a single to start a six-run frame that broke the game wide open.

Windsich followed with a single of his own to put runners at the corners before Betts cleared the bases with a double to push the lead to 4-1.

Christopher drew a walk before a Hofmeister bunt put runners at second and third with one out.

P.J. Anderson (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Hampton singled home Betts to make it a 5-1 game before Ursinus went to its fourth different pitcher of the inning.

A McKinney sacrifice fly scored Christopher before an error reloaded the bases with two outs.

Jackow delivered a two-run single to set the final margin.

In addition to Betts' four-hit nightcap, Sivo, Jackow, Windisch and Hampton all had two in the contest. Jackow had three knocks in game one while Windisch and Betts had two each.

McDaniel will await word on a possible ECAC Division III South bid on May 13.
