Hayward records pair of hits

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – A four-run eighth inning from McDaniel proved to be the difference in a 7-4 non-conference baseball win over Messiah on Wednesday.

Brandon Hayward (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) led the Green Terror (10-6) with a 2-for-3 showing, adding two RBIs and two runs scored.

Casey Ebersole went 2-for-4 for the Falcons (4-11) while David Sletta added a pair of hits.

Joe Fiore (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Beach) was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the second inning before taking second on a passed ball.

After Hayward drew a walk, a wild pitch moved both base runners up a base before a Garret Nemser (Hartsdale, N.Y./Edgemont) groundout plated Fiore with the game's first run.

Two batters later, Sean Sivo (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) singled to center to score Hayward for a 2-0 lead.

A passed ball on a Pat Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) walk allowed Sivo to score for a 3-0 advantage.

Sletta led off the visitor eighth with a single before a groundout on a defensive gem by McDaniel second baseman Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) and Zach Brubaker single trimmed the deficit to 3-1.

With Brubaker on third after a stolen base and Ebersole single, the Green Terror caught Ebersole trying to steal second but Brubaker scored to cut the margin to one.

A Cameron Bahr (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) hot shot by the first baseman led off the bottom of the eight before he was lifted for pinch-runner Chad Nazelrod (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley).

Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) followed with a single to center, putting runners at the corners for Fiore, who lined a ball up the middle to score Nazelrod and push the lead to 4-2.

After Fiore stole second, Hayward followed with a single of his own to score Betts and Fiore for a 6-2 advantage.

With one out, a throwing error allowed Jonathan McKinney (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) to reach and score Hayward for a 7-2 lead.

A fielding error and Ben Sollenberger pinch-hit double put runners at second and third in the top of the ninth before one-out singles from Jeremiah Eaton and Sletta closed the deficit to 7-4 with runners at first and second.

Marty Windisch (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley), who was closing out a committee of four pitchers for McDaniel, induced a double play to get out it.

Zach Jones (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) pitched the first two innings with four strikeouts to improve to 5-1 on the season.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Penn State-Harrisburg on Thursday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
