Hayward records four hits, four runs

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – McDaniel staved off a sixth-inning game-two rally to earn a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary's (Md.) in non-conference baseball action on Saturday.

The Green Terror (2-2) took the opener 6-1 behind a 10-strikeout, complete-game performance by Zach Jones (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora). In game two, McDaniel built a 7-0 lead before the Seahawks (3-5) plated six runs in the sixth to draw within one. The Green Terror tacked on four insurance runs in the seventh for an 11-6 win.

Brandon Hayward (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) led the McDaniel offense with two hits, two runs and an RBI in each game.

Jared Eaker paced St. Mary's with four hits in the twinbill.

Luke Green led off the bottom of the first before scoring from third on a Zach Nadlny two-out single to stake the Seahawks to a 1-0 lead.

The Green Terror responded in the second, however, behind a Cameron Bahr (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) one-out double to left field.

Hayward followed with a single to score Bahr and knot the game before scoring two batters later on a Joe Fiore (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Beach) double to center.

Jonathan McKinney (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) walked with one-out in the third. He was erased on a Pat Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) fielder's choice. Christopher stole second before scoring on an error for a 3-1 lead.

Hayward and Andrew Hofmeister (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) recorded back-to-back one-out singles in the sixth to put runners at the corners before successfully executing a double steal for a 4-1 lead.

A McKinney one-out double and Christopher RBI single pushed the lead to 5-1 in the seventh  After Christopher stole third, Bahr rapped a two-out single to left to score Christopher for the final margin.

Christopher and Bahr matched Hayward with two hits each in game one.

The nightcap was scoreless until Bahr and Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) singled to lead off the fourth.

After a Hayward sacrifice bunt, Fiore doubled with two outs to score both runners.

Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) and Sean Sivo (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) added back-to-back singles to score Fiore and McKinney added a sixth hit in the frame, scoring Jackow for a 4-0 lead.

Bahr walked to lead off the fifth before Betts doubled to put runners at second and third. A wild pitch plated Bahr for a 5-0 advantage before Hayward doubled home Betts to push the lead to six.

With runners at the corners and one out, Hayward scored on an attempted double steal in which the defense took the out at second to make it a 7-0 game.

Green singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth, igniting a Seahawk attempt at a rally.

A balk and Eaker single broke up the shutout and stretch of 11 straight scoreless innings by McDaniel pitching.

Back-to-back doubles from Corey Napier and Nadolny closed the deficit to 7-3.

Michael O'Neill singled to chase David Pisauro (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) before Mike Schmidt greeted Jack Dowd (Friendship, Md./Bishop McNamara) with a walk to load the bases.

An RBI groundout made it a 7-4 game before a balk closed the deficit to 7-5 and a Brad Dioguardo infield single made it a one-run game before Dowd got a flyout to end the inning.

The Green Terror bats went back to work for insurance in the seventh, however. Betts and Hayward each singled to lead off the frame before an error put runners at second and third.

With one out, Fiore singled to center to score Betts and Jackow drew a walk to load the bases.

A Sivo walk forced in Hayward for a 9-6 advantage before Marty Windisch (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) singled to right field, scoring Fiore and Jackow for an 11-6 lead.

Andrew Monger (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) pitched through a 1-2-3 seventh with two ground outs and a popup to seal the win.

Pisauro struck out seven in 5 1/3 innings to pick up the game-two win.

Sico, McKinney, Hayward and Fiore all had two hits as part of a 14-hit attack in the nightcap.

McDaniel returns to action at Gallaudet on Thursday. Game time is 2 p.m.
