Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Penn State-Abington scored four runs in the seventh inning to open up a 10-5 lead en route to a 10-6 victory over McDaniel in the first round of the 2012 ECAC South baseball tournament on Wednesday.
Mike Freeman (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) led the second-seeded Green Terror (24-13) with three hits and two RBIs. James Chiorello (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) added three hits.
Pat Moran recorded 3-for-4 day to go with three RBIs and three runs scored to lead the seventh-seeded Lions (24-19), who will face Penn State-Behrend – an 8-7 winner over Waynesburg – in Saturday's second semifinal at top-seeded Wesley. The Wolverines take on Marywood in the first semifinal at 12 p.m.
Trailing 4-3, Wil Erskine led off the fifth inning with a single up the middle. A throwing error put Erskine at second before he took third on a Jesse Goldstein sacrifice.
AJ Vagliani was hit by a pitch and swiped second before both scored on a Moran single one batter later, turning the one-run deficit into a one-run lead.
A Mike Kerns two-out double stretched the lead to 6-4.
Chiorello poked a single through the left side to open the bottom of the frame before Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) was hit by a pitch and Chris Longo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) drew a walk to load the bases and chase the Abington starter.
A Brandon Hayward (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) towering ball to left that wasn't caught scored Chiorello but resulted in an out at third.
Brian Camp got two ground outs to get out of the jam with a one-run advantage.
An error allowed Goldstein to reach to lead off the seventh before he swiped both second and third.
A one-out Moran hot-shot single off the pitcher's glove scored Goldstein before a Matt Lawson single and stolen base put runners at second and third.
Kerns followed with his second double of the game to make it a 9-5 game. Bill Parave followed with a single of his own to stretch the advantage to five.
Danny Snight (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College) came on in relief to get the final two outs.
A Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) leadoff triple in the eight followed by a Patrick Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) sacrifice fly closed the deficit to 10-6 but Camp allowed just two more baserunners the rest of the way to pick up his fifth win of the season.
A one-out walk to Moran followed by a hit batter and Mike Kerns infield single loaded the bases in the first inning for Parave, who single to center to stake the Lions to a 2-0 lead.
A muffed throwback between pitches allowed Kerns to score from third with two outs for a 3-0 lead.
Christopher drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the frame before a fielder's choice and Freeman single put two on with one out.
Chiorello followed with an RBI single before Longo sent a shot down the left-field line to score Freeman, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Dan French (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) led off the second with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice.
A two-out single from Jimmy Najera (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha) put runners at the corners for Freeman, who doubled to the wall to score both runners for the 4-3 lead.
Najera and Longo each had two hits.
