Watkins tallies four

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore scored a free-position goal with 4:17 left to break a 12-all deadlock and defeat McDaniel 13-12 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action on Tuesday.

Chelsea Watkins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) led the Green Terror (4-5, 1-2 CC) with four goals and an assist while Danielle Entrot (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added three goals.

Annalise Penikis paced the Garnet (6-2, 2-1 CC) with five goals and three assists.

After Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and Danielle DeColli (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) scored back-to-back unassisted goals 2 minutes, 42 seconds apart to knot the game at 12-all with 6:52 to play, Penikis converted from the eight-meter arc for her eighth point of the game.

Mary Tokolish (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and Penikis exchanged unassisted goals in the game's first 1:56 before Entrot started a four-goal run off a Kaitlin Mahoney (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) assist with 23:57 to play in the first half.

Watkins recorded a natural hat trick over a 4-minute, 1-second span to put McDaniel on top 5-1 with 19:29 remaining.

However, Swarthmore countered with four straight goals of its own, including free-position goals from Beth Martin and Nicole Vanchieri, to knot the game at 5-all with 9:50 to play.

Entrot finished a feed from Watkins with 1:24 on the clock before Penikis converted with 19 ticks remaining to even the game at 6-all entering the break.

Marie Mutryn connected on a free-position show just 1:16 into the second half before Corinne Sommi and Penekis finished solo runs to put the Garnet in front 9-6 with 24:04 to play.

Watkins and Mutryn traded goals before Monica Parcell (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) and Lucy Whitacre exchanged markers to make it an 11-8 game with 12:47 to play.

Entrot responded 21 seconds later off a Messersmith assist before Messersmith converted a free-position shot another 43 seconds after that to close the gap to 11-10.

Annelise Mowry pushed the lead back to two with 10:01 to play before the Green Terror knotted the game for the fourth time.

Messersmith added six ground balls, six draw controls and three caused turnovers to her two goals and assist.

The Green Terror returns to action at No. 8 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
