Box Score 2 Haverford sweeps pair from McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Mike Galetta rapped out six hits to lead Haverford to a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Sunday.
The Fords (22-4, 7-2 CC) needed nine innings to win the scheduled seven-inning opener, 3-1. Bryan Henrick scattered six hits over eight innings to help his team to a 10-0 victory in game two.
James Chiorello (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) led the Green Terror (10-11, 3-6 CC) with three hits.
Knotted at 1-all in game one, Galetta led off the visitor ninth with a double to the wall in left-center.
After a strikeout, Bobby Bailey singled under a diving McDaniel infielder to put runners at the corners before stealing second to put two in scoring position.
Matt Liscovitz followed with a double of his own, sneaking a ball inside the left-field foul line to give Haverford a 3-1 lead.
Zach Jones (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) notched his seventh and eighth strikeouts of the day to keep it a two-run game.
Chris Longo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) led off the bottom of the inning with a single to right before a fly out and double play gave Jonny Williams the complete-game victory.
Bailey rapped a one-out single up the middle before stealing second.
With two outs, Alex Hudak drew a walk as Bailey was stealing third.
Louis DeRosa dropped down a bunt to load the bases before Jake Chaplin was hit on the front elbow with a full-count pitch to force in Bailey for a 1-0 lead.
A one-out fielding error in the bottom of the inning allowed Longo to reach before a Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) sacrifice moved Longo to second.
Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) followed with a single to left-center to score Longo and even the game.
In the nightcap, Bobby Hubley led off the third inning with a double before advancing to third on a sacrifice and scoring on a Charlie Carluccio two-out pop double down the right-field line that a trio of Green Terror players had a chance but could not get to in time.
Jeff Butera followed with a single to center that allowed Carluccio to score for a 2-0 lead.
After back-to-back singles from Hubley and DeRosa to lead off the fifth, Carluccio tripled to the wall in center with one out before Butera followed with a two-run home run over the left-field wall, stretching the advantage to 6-0.
A Galetta double and dropped two-out popup stretched the lead to 7-0.
A run-scoring double from Carluccio and RBI single from Galetta stretched the lead to 8-0 in the eighth before Liscovitz and Hubley singles in the ninth set the final margin.
The Green Terror returns to action at No. Johns Hopkins on Monday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
