St. Mary's slips by McDaniel, 11-10

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Lauren Bennett scored with 10:17 to play, breaking a 10-all deadlock and sending St. Mary's (Md.) to an 11-10 victory over McDaniel in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday.

Maggie Macleay tallied four goals to lead the Seahawks (3-2) while Lauriann Parker added two goals and two assists.

Brittany Lines (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) paced the Green Terror (0-2) with three goals.

After five straight McDaniel goals tied the game at 10-all, Aubrey Mirkin, who finished with a goal and three assists, found Bennett for the game-winner. The defense held the Green Terror to just a single free-position shot over the final 10:17 to preserve the victory.

Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and Chelsea Watkins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) staked McDaniel to a 2-0 lead over the game's first 6:41.

Messersmith tallied off a Wakins feed 2:16 into the game and Watkins finished a solo run 4:25 later.

Mirkin, however, sparked a four-goal run over an 8-minute, 27-second span to turn the two-goal deficit into a two-goal advantage.

Parker tallied her first assist of the day on the opening goal of the run with 20:01 to play in the half before a pair of Mirkin-to-Macleay goals 32 seconds apart made it a 3-2 Seahawks lead with 16:28 on the clock.

Lauren Gray converted a free-position attempt to cap the stretch.

Goals 1 minute, 40 seconds apart by Lines and Anna Beaudry (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) knotted the game with 8:07 to play in the first half before Parker converted a pair of unassisted tallies to reestablish a two-goal lead with 4:08 on the clock.

Lisa Jurd (Columbia, Md./Hammond) and Macleay exchanged markers in the final 55 seconds to make it a 7-5 game at halftime.

Three straight St. Mary's goals to open the second half pushed the lead to 10-5 with 24:06 to play.

Three minutes later, Beaudry tallied her second of the game on a free-position attempt to halt the run.

A pair of Lines solo runs around a Jurd free-position goal closed the deficit to 10-9 with 14:28 on the clock before Messersmith evened the game with 11:53 showing.

Watkins added three draw controls and three ground balls to her two points while Steph Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) picked up a team-high five ground balls.

McDaniel returns to action at Stevenson on Tuesday. Game time is 3 p.m.
