Olgethorpe capitalizes for 9-3 win over McDaniel

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Andy Farrey recorded three hits and an RBI to lead Olgethorpe to a 9-3 victory over McDaniel in non-conference baseball action at the 2011 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Friday.

Jimmy Najera (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha) led the Green Terror (5-5) in the final game of its eight-game trip with a 2-for-2 showing while drawing two walks.

The Stormy Petrels (7-7) rapped out 13 hits but also capitalized on six McDaniel errors and six walks issued by Green Terror pitching, building a 6-0 lead en route to the six-run win.

With one out in the top of the third inning, Brendan Pilger and Jeff Brothers drew back-to-back walks. Between the walks, Pilger stole second and was able to move to third on the first of three errors that came on stolen-base attempts.

With runners at the corners, Cory Leff drove in Pilger with a sacrifice fly before Adam Brazenas drew the third walk of the inning.

Consecutive RBI singles from Ryan Grau and Farrey played Brothers and Brazenas, respectively, for a 3-0 lead.

Jeff Pope led off the fourth with a walk before scoring on a Pilger one-out double.

An error, sacrifice fly and Brazenas RBI double stretched the lead to 6-0 and forced a pitching change.

Gio Fricchione (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern) retired four of the next five batters he faced before issuing a walk to lead off the sixth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County) and Ryan Byrnes (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) led off the frame with singles.

An error and RBI groundout cut the deficit to 6-2 before a pair of flyouts ended the inning.

Another stolen base and error put Pilger, who drew the walk to lead off the sixth, at third base before he was able to score on a second miscue.

A Matthew Cornwell solo shot, Pilger double, stolen base and error pushed the lead to 9-2 in the seventh.

Singles from Matthew Bodnar (Douglasville, Pa./Central Catholic) and Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) coupled with a wild pitch put runners at second and third with one out in the seventh.

A Patrick Christopher (Union Bridge, N.J./St. John Vianney) sacrifice fly set the final margin.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Penn State-York on Tuesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
